Hi, hoping someone can help me! For the past while I've been working on this painting, and its finally finished but I'd really like to add the name of the mine...Does anyone know?

The postcard it's based on just refers to a mine ruin in Cornwall...so that narrows it down to just a few hundred!

I don't think its anywhere in the St Just/Botallack area as it doesn't familiar...so perhaps somewhere around the coast of St Agnes?

It's Wheal Owles stamps engine, St Just. It's had quite a lot of restoration by the NT

Owles, everyone likes Owles...

Sorry, that's an in-joke 😞

Nice work, J!

Wheal Owles seems to have escaped ICLOK's camera so far... :bored:

Ok, thanks for that...West Wheal Owles... Is this definitely correct though? As I cant help noticing distinct lack of chimney in the photo as opposed to the feature on the postcard and painting... Did this fall down and get rebuilt then?

J

BTW-Wheal Owles, isn't that the mine which broke into flooded workings, several miners drowned?

The chimney looks like it's in the wrong position if you look carefully

The biggest clue is the rear window in the bob loft, very rare if not unique in any engine house

Surely that would make the chimney on the RH side looking from the rear of the Eng Hse... is it just out of shot on your archive pic? just a thought! Regs ICLOK 🙂

Windows exist in rear gables of bob lofts at Talargoch Lead Mine, Dyserth, Clwyd, 100" pumping engine house of 1860, Penprys Colliery, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, whim engine house of 1889. Based on the photos of rear gables of Cornish engine houses in Wales that I have to hand, this is a rate of around one in three.
