Does anyone know the identity of the two buildings which sit in the field behind Daubuz's engine house ? (South Wheal Frances Mine, Treskillard, Camborne). One building is v small, and doesn't look like a traditional engine house, it is completely overgrown with greenery. Access is prevented by an electric fence. The other building, further on, looks like a compressor house, or the type of building which might have had a transverse engine in it. Any information on the identity of these would be gratefully received.

Many Thanks

I'm not sure which way you are looking but Smith's engine house ( West Wheal Frances) is just over the back and on private land. Don't know about the other building although I may have a photo of it somewhere.

What an astonishing piece of topiary - must have taken decades to train the yew trees to that shape!

If I remember correctly these were the only other remains on the sett. But as far as I'm aware the engine house is the only extant remains of W.W. Frances. Of course I could be wrong. It has been known. 🙂

Hi Carnkie

Thanks, I'll call the "green fairytale cottage" Smith's Engine House" then. It's such an odd little building, it must have had an extremely small engine in it !
The identity of the other derelict building behind it remains a mystery then...does anyone else on the forum know what it is ?

Many Thanks

I need to find such mine plans - where did you get hold of those ? I see that you live in Camborne, and on my trips down have thought of visiting the library, is that where you find a lot of your data ?

Thanks for that. I'll add it to the album.

Was Smith's Shaft capped in the major capping programme?

I haven't got around to climbing around in the undergrowth there yet. Almost, but not quite.

I don't know when it was capped but one thing is for sure you won't have to go climbing around in the undergrowth.

When I was last there the whole area was bare, even little grass, much as the little you can see in this photo.

I wasn't actually looking for the shaft but it should have fairly obvious without much effort. Got me thinking now.

Getting back briefly to Daubuz' engine house the shaft is about 60 yards to the west. Here you would definately have to scrabble around in the undergrowth and that is an understatement!

Bastards. Would love to see that chain ladder in action - unless (horror of horrors) they were just dragging one along and dropping shafts with it. I've heard of 100m+ descents on electron ladders and felt a little fear - twisting about for that kind of length must be horrible. Slippery as hell once they get a liberal coating of mud on the rungs.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
