I wonder if anyone has come accross this name before. I
have just bought some additional land which seems to have
an adit with a stream coming out of it but cant find anything listed, nor could Cornwall Consultants yet. The closest entry
that Cornwall Consultants could find was Wheal Dumpling
but that is quite a way to the north. We are just trying to clear out the years of growth around the adit entrance.

There was a Croft Colding on Pengelly farm. It's not a million miles from Nancegollan. Are we in that area?
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Well it may not be a farm now, this was in 1857. It's not where I suggested anyway, too far south. According the GR on here Wheal Dumpling is quite close to you. http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/DUMPLING-Mine/?gowhere=%2fmines%2f%3fpid%3d1%26ac%3dA%26ad%3d50

Quick question: have you been up this adit? If not, you looking for volunteers? 😉

The only other suggestion I can think of is Oatfield which is to the east of you. http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/OATFIELD-Mine/?gowhere=%2fmines%2f%3fpid%3d1%26ac%3dA%26ad%3d50
Pengelly farm is still there but not relevant as it's to the N/E of Nancegollan.

wow cool thats me !!!!

where it says spring is where the adit is and its interesting
that there is an old shaft up the hill which when you go there is
a normal field but on quite a slope so beginning to look interesting that shaft makes real sense. I hope this turns out
to be real and the adit is genuine. But im well encouraged by the shaft furtjer up the hill. It makes sense.

In a recent conversation it cropped up that there was an adit marked on the map as a spring near Crenver and Abraham. This is probably it.

The workings to the north are drained by the Binner/Crenver adit and I reckon your adit probably heads back under that field.

If you need a hand clearing it, there are a few enthusiastic locals adept with spades and machettes who are usually bored on Sundays.

Edit.

The first map was lifted from the 1888 6" and this later one (1908) shows nothing.

As per most of Cornwall, the 1888 issue is far superior for the mine historian/explorer.

Interesting stuff Stuey. I was hoping to glean some detail from HJs Wendron Tin but the site is just, only just, to the west of his area although he does mention the Crenver and Abraham adit.

Could'nt help noticing your post on this site, yes i do know Pengelly croft mine, in fact the field is still called Big Croft.
Your adit is real sure enough, and nothing to do with Wheal Dumpling or any mine to the north. It branches off in there, one adit goes to croft mine, thats only about 80/90 feet to the west on the hump where the field is coloured greyish, the other one (same adit) winds its way southeast to pick Alfred shaft in the corner of the field, then southwest up to Higher Reddalon(where the fir trees are). I do not know what this shaft was called.
The late Lily Cornish's father Dick, once told me he had been down through that adit, he said sometimes you could stand up straight, but mostly on your hands and knees, i think he was very young then, and so was i when i knew him, about 15.
I hope this helps a little, always best to ask someone who knows.

Thanks for this.
We are starting to clear the entrance shortly and ill
let you know how we get on. The water is pretty deep and
very soft base with silt etc. Im thinking that as the area is dug
it could well be possible to stand depending how much water flows out !
Cheers

A good dig is one of the biggest joys of exploring. It's always nice to read other people's reports and findings.

I look forward to it indeed.

Which reminds me, many of us have started several digs and abandoned them after a few frenzied sessions. One particular one we dug into and cleared had an adit of a mile or so in length which leads to all sorts of stuff. We got the water level down from being 18" underwater to 12" of breathing space. We meant to go back with wetsuits and haven't got around to it yet.

Anyway, keep your eyes peeled and I hope it bears fruit 🙂

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
