One of the tramways went from the Basset stamps, via Lyle's Shaft, to the West Basset stamps. This required two tunnels, one under the main Carnkie road and the other under the pathway from Lyle's towards Miners shaft. (See 1908 map).

Both these tunnels were filled in many years ago. But recently they excavated the one under the road to inspect it's condition, ( I can only assume because it goes under the road). As you can see it's not in bad nick. It has now been filled in again.

This is just the top of the other tunnel.

They named a road after you?! 😉

Presumably the majority of the tramway route has been converted to a cycleway now?

No this route no longer clearly exists but the tramway from the Basset stamps to Marriott's shaft has been converted as can be seen.

They named a whole village after him (but we try not to remind him because it goes to his head)
