Just needed to clarify something, the water isn't running out , the water has been tapped into from the side of the tunnel wall its not water running down from the back, it gets quite dry once you pass our tapped into water supply .

Gannister - quartzite used to make refractory bricks. The thought had crossed my mind too.

Ok this is not as exciting a prospect as I'd hope but its a thought. There was a pit above where my entrance is. Looking at an old map from mid 1800's it states that there was a staith on this land. Found out that is a place to load unload. Sure you all know that but humour me please. So been thinking about this !!! Could my tunnel actually go up to the pit so that the coal trollies could be wheeled down to the staith. I know the guy that gave me the old sketch told me how they tipped the coal from a hight above the lane into the horse drawn waggons. Could the fire clay have also come down this tunnel and been fired in the furnace on site. My imagination might now be in overdrive but its just a thought. Hope you don't mind me throwing this in. :angel:

Sounds possible, in which case the wall may block off an old shaft landing, failing that it may hold back the shaft infilling (if any).

A place where a hoist cage may stop at other than pit bottom or surface.
Usually where a seam is worked at an intermediate level.

Edit: purists will say pit bottom and surface are "Landings"

Thanks for explaining. Well all hopefully will be revealed soon enough . I can't wait, I'm one of them people that couldn't have my xmas gifts under the tree before xmas morning !!! I'd have to peek as I so often have ha ha ..

Is the Shaft that you mention to the right of Gauther Fold?
If so,then your level would be in a few 100yds before reaching the shaft,going by the section of the upper seams,i would imagine the Shaft to be an Air Shaft for ventilation,as an Incline would have been a simpler and cheaper option.

Mr Mike,any chance of us seeing the list of seams on the left of your BGS map,i am wondering if the Old Colliery in the village is Shackleton Colliery working the Little seam.

The maps I've looked at show the coal staith on this land in 1848 by 1896 it looks like its all over and the house is then here there is no longer any mention of the staith.

Evening
Was so very cold today , the guys turned up as promised and had a good look round.

I'd rather they tell you about it as I haven't really had chance to talk to the guys , I was busy working BUT one thing I will say is I have a piece of my own coal to bring in the NEW YEAR !!!!!!!. 😉
