Perfectly understandable lancashireheeler! I don't think you'll find a single mine explorer who hasn't thought "Er, should I really be doing this?"

If you would like the encouragement of numbers then market man and I would be happy to join the party. Might be best to drill a hole all the way through the wall first, just to check for water. Market man has 18 years down the Yorkshire pits under his belt, so has a natural eye for "reading" coal mines in terms of safety.

P.S. Do you have lots of small, waggy tailed friends there? πŸ˜‰

I would say it starts at the O in Rock View and then to the f of footpath but that's my uneducated guess ..

Looking at the stones at the entrance ,they do look like Sandstone, and there were a few Flagstone mines in the area,

Does the tramway that was on your lane go down to Peel Mill?maybe thats where the stones were cut and dressed.

What height is in this level,?it does`nt seem that high, nor wide for that matter, and with the stone arching in the roof,i would imagine it being opened in the 1800`s sometime.

ts really strange that you should mention stone and cutting dressing because next to Peel mill is a stone yard I think its been there many years.

Forgot to say the height inside the entrance is about 5 ft but I wonder if the silt buld up over time has made it less. The width is maybe 6 ft to 8ft in places.

Just been informed by my other half that the width is more like 8 ft to 10 ft

There is an interesting flue arrangment just to the south, looks like it connected to the mill.

Sorry for late response. The map is late 40's base amended to early 50's - it's county series, but with National grid markings. It was amended by hand in my father's office in Bury when they used to update them regularly.

Cheers

Thanks Grahami,
I wondered the map age,as there was no Adit or mention of level at the point of Rock View, but that is also the case in a lot of the BGS maps.

Doing a bit of Coal prospecting last year,we opened an old mine ,details we un-earthed,showed it last worked 1878,the faces when we eventually got that far in,were still on thier feet, the face posts still standing, and even a few pair of notched timbers on the roadways.

Yet there was no documented proof of the name of this Colliery, even though it was showed on the BGS map, with its Adits and access Tramways.

Hi All
Just to thank everyone here that has helped me and shown an interest in my little mine or whatever it proves to be. I have been flooded with emails of offers to take a look . I have got some people from this group coming to have a look on Saturday and I am sure results will be on here later that day if there is anything found. I am sorry I haven't replied to everyone but if there is anything worth seeing then the people that did email me will be welcome to have a look at a later date.
Must say, This is the friendliest group Ive been on !

I have got a list of abandoned mines in your area, but I cannot find anything referring to your location. There is actually a Rock View mine, but in a different area. On the old map I have of your area (I've uploaded it), it looks like petty much all mines are shown on it, but there is nothing indicating anything near you.

Out of interest, have you found any traces of coal in the entrance?

Had to crop the map as it was massive, it is from the BGS

There are no traces of coal but this entrance has been used by us and previous owners for our water supply for many years so this evidence may have just gone over time, however whenever I empty the water bucket you see on the photo now you come to mention it there is always tiny fragments of coal in there. Plays havoc with the pressure hose.

Post removed, I confused a field boundary with a possible outcrop line.

The Red line also follows the 1000m contour line fairly close, but slight difference in shape above Rock Veiw.

Looking at the map, there does`nt seem to be another seam below outcropping,by going off whats the other side of the valley.

The old mine up the road, most likely was a shaft, going for the deeper seems, but without the index on the left of the map, impossible to tell for which seams.

Think you are right, I removed the pic as it was of doubtful use. πŸ™‚

Do you think this entrance here could have joined up to the colliery on the main road. I know the only way to find out is knock a few bricks out etc etc but just a thought.

Anything is a possibility, but is`nt this a level,in that the water runs out?
If this had been a Drift, then yes a good possibility that it was a Fan Drift for ventilation, and also access for Horse`s going down.
But i somehow think this is not a Coal level,as there would definately be sign`s of coal waste on the surface, even after 150 yrs.
But,without seeing the surface area,i could never be sure.

But if it is found out to be a Coal level, and you do break the brickwork down,be sure to build it back in-case someone ventures in without an Oil lamp or Gas Detector.

Whatever it turns out to be its in a safe area and nobody but me and whoever I allow in there can gain access but thankyou for the heads up on this.
Yes it is on a level but it doesn't mean it will be once through the wall does it ?
I have to explain that apart from this entrance the area around has changed a great deal and much of it concreted over. Its just so frustrating that there is nothing written or mapped anywhere about this. Maybe its the first Victorian attempt at a garage ! LOL .

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
