I have found this site by chance and just joined. I am unsure if its what I am looking for but here goes. I moved into a victorian house going on 3 years ago and on the land is an old private mine entrance which is bricked up some 40 feet in. I would love to find out what is behind this brick wall and to date know nothing about it other than an old sketch by a local lady which shows coal carts along my now lane etc. Does anyone know anything about this little mine ?

Hi welcome, I know the area a bit, done some exploring near by, if you could give a grid reference that would be a great help or post a pic on the forum. Is this adit on your land? If that is the case then prehaps entry could be gained! sounds most interesting.

As I say I know nothing about any of this kind of thing but am very interested to know about the history the past etc. I don't know my grid reference but if you email me privately at [email protected] I will let you know where I am. This is on my land and I own this land. I have just spoken to a man that owned this place 10 years ago for about 25 years and it was bricked up then. He doesn't really know anymore than I do

Can I add this isn't a small opening , well I suppose it would be to some big mines but we have our water butt up there and can walk in to clean this out. By the way my other half just said no wonderhe takes flack from me ! He says its more like 100 ft tothe wall . We still have some old iron wheels here from the coal trollies ..

Ok this all sounds very good, i'll email you and prehaps knowing your location will help me find out more about it and there is a chance that we could gain access if you own the land the adit is on, very good indeed!

Must of shut some time ago, I've a 1956 Guide to the Coalfields & nothing listed. Nearest listed is Britannia Drift, midway between Shawforth & Bacup.
Take very great care if you plan to explore beyond the stopping as the air is likley to be irrespirable.
At the very least you should have a working saftey lamp & the ability to use it.
We inhabit an island made of coal, surrounded by a sea full of fish. How can we go wrong.......

I know for certain this has been closed off since at least the end of the 50's but I have an old sketch drawing from maybe 1920 , 30 showing the mine in progress. I live just behind what was Peel mill or earlier the Shawforth spinning, manufacturing and mining company !

I have to add that I know for certain this mine was closed at the end of the 50's I don't know how long ithad been closed before that. It is very interesting because the tunnel in is hand made with stone and beautifully done, that's why I wondered why would anyone go to such effort at an entrance if theres not much beyond . I also have a culvert under my lane that I own ! lanes for Drains came up the other week (Long story ) the guy told me its the biggest culvert belonging to one home he has ever seen and said you could almost drive a bus down it. Anyway me being intregued with history am happy if any of you lot want to come and have a look.

There's a disused mine shown at NGR: SD890212, a bit far from you.

I suppose the culvert is something to do with the reservoir at NGR: SD891212?

As I say I only know what I can see and what I own. I am very interested in this mine because as you say it isn't documented and I have looked .

Pity I live a long way south, it would be no problem to drill the wall and gas test etc. 🙂

As a matter of interest, have you checked the Reference Library maps for the area?

Sorry to mislead you .. I don't think I was told to leave alone beacuse of problems exploring the mine but rather interupting my business

Not sure if this helps, two on the list are in Shawforth, I assume that
UG workers on the list means underground?

If anyone has any plans on going in, it might be useful to take a few bricks out to maybe get some ventilation going / see if a draft can be detected.

Are there any gaps or vents in the wall, or it is completely sealed as far as you can see?

I have walked up to where it is bricked off, don't think there was any air vents but will go and have a look later .

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
