It appears once more that things at South Crofty are taking a turn for the worst with the removal of the old circular saw from the carpenters shop. I was told it is now lying in state in the yard (covered I hope) awaiting it's 'future?'.
I've heard that some of the buildings have been demolished too. One tale is of them demolishing the miners dry in order to make room for the building of a.....Miners dry ...!?!?!?!

Here's a picture of the saw in-situ.

Oh God No!.... The red mist!!!! My head hurts...........uuurrrrrr!

Seriously though , I do hope that they will restore the saw back to it's original position on the site and not relocate it to a different one as so many other projects have done. Moving archaeology when there is no need to is pointless. If you are going to preserve a site do it as you find it. Now I'm seeing gingham curtains and the smell of heritage fudge!.....Reaches for the single malt and imminent oblivion......

And did you also hear of the fate of the miner's cottage that was at the far end of the site that Heartlands are developing? This was supposed to be renovated, furnished and presented as a typical C19th Cornish miner's cottage. Unfortunately it was accidentally demolished late last year due to someone from Kerrier mistaking it for another cottage due for demolition close by. Read it and weep! 😢

Apparently there were three that were earmarked for preservation and now only one remains.
There must be a better name for these acts, as the Luddites represented a somewhat different view.
Heritage Terrorists..? History Staazi..? (spelling) not too far away from the mind police.....
Makes me gag. I'm suprised they don't advertise on the big billboards as 'Giving the people history the way it should be'
I feel an Ed Reardon type rant coming on. Best apply the brakes now........

Is this perhaps another classic example of where people of no interest in industrial herritage are employed in places like this simply because they happen to be unemployed when there was a job going.
I have seen many places like it where staff employed do not have any interest nor knowlage of the idustrial herritage they are supposed to be protecting, restoring etc.

The old holman site bordering wheal harriet has been dug up in preparation for the regen project recently, I have seen several metal objects and other old debris strewn in the piles and start to wonder was there an archeological survey done on the site before the JCBs moved in?
I wonder what was there before Holmans?
It seems when you have lots of industrial archeology it is somehow OK to demolish some of it. Is there a report on the archeology of the CPR project anywhere?

Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

The Historic Environment Section of CCC undertake detailed archaeological assessments before any site is 'developed'. The report will make recommendations as the sensitivity and archaeological importance of the features on site and how thay should be retained and conserved and a watching brief will be carried out as the work is being done. All HES reports are made publicly available.

However, Kerrier don't have a good track record in taking on board HES recommendations. I know in the case of Heartlands, the World Heritage Site Office (based within CCC) have made many detailed recommendations for what should be retained and what modifications they deem permissable so as not to compromise the authenticity and integrity of the Robinson's site. It remains to be seen what will transpire here in the future. I hope that the fabulous and rare example of a circular saw will be incorporated into the adaptive re-use of this site. This has certainly been recommended by HES and the Trevithick Society.
