I should imagine Roy that similar views are upheld even upto today and more especially to mine exploring in today's Health & Safety conscious society. The ignorance of the article is further compounded by the artist's license to portray participants as either turn of the century Alpine explorers or Royal Marine Commandos. To illustrate the article with someone wearing a miners helmet would be to associate mining with a pointless pastime and in doing so possibly insult many of its readers at the time.
It was around 1965 that I first went underground for pleasure ?? coming from NE mining family on one side and Nottinghamshire miners on the other, every effort had been taken to ensure that the family's post war generation didn't go underground for any reason. As I remember it anyone who went down any hole for pleasure or sport was considered to be odd if not totally barking.
Is very hard to believe that back then many incidents and accidents that today might make half a column inch in a local rag, made headlines news then. The Neil Moss tragedy and the furore that followed being an example.
As for Reveille, well according to Wikipedia it ceased publication in August 1979 and joined forces with Tit-Bits, which also is now no longer. Both publications fell into the "light entertainment" category.
Excellent find.
