A very large crane arrived at Crofty today, its jib is now poised over the head-frame

Probably not, as long as it didn't have SWRDA written on the side!

Get some photos man!

It's an odd situation. You have a totally iconic headgear which is in a poor shape and probably not required. I'd like them to give it a coat of paint but understand if it has to go.

It would be nice to have a big headgear present as it is a flag of "we're still at it".

If it required replacing as being corroded (I gather it is quite bad) I hope they get an ex-colliery biggun.

What on earth would be the point of putting a colliery head-gear on a tin mine?. Totally out of context.

What time was that, it certainly is there no more! (The crane not the Headgear!!!) From a structural point of view I believe the south side has had it, the North side being only 20 years old should still be fine.

Long term the mine intend on using the North winder, so it is doubtful they would remove the headframe, unless they reconfigured the shaft from its current four compartments to a two copartment shaft operating solely from the Northern winder. To optimisie the shaft would require either major alterations to the headrframe or a complete replacement, unfortunately I can't ever see it being replaced with one anywhere near the size of the existing as there is no need, I believe the size was as a result of the size of the drum on South Winder, which is about 3 times the size of North Winder., ironically it actually has a smaller capacity!!!

Wheal Jane had an Ex-Colliery headgear on it. Clemow's shaft.

Dolcoath Williams shaft had a pretty meaty headgear.

They often have colliery winders.....

I personally think a nice colliery headgear like Daw Mill is among the most majestic things in industry.

I think you are mis-understanding what he said.

It seems he meant to say that if the headgear was to be replaced with the intention to use it for mining, not to replace it for heritage/museum/restoration purposes.

To add to the list of ex-colliery headgears: Allen's shaft... though I think that is the same one that was on Clemow's shaft.

Allen's shaft headgear as far as I know was made locally and never completed for that matter, it certainly was not the cloemows headframe, which was dismantled nearly 10 years after Allen's was erected

The headgear I was referring to is Robinson's' not Cooks, so future mining does not apply.

Allan's shaft is a nice looking headgear. It looks similar skeletally to Geevor (off the top of my head).

Interesting how both Crofty (N winder) Geevor and Clemows had those odd flat spoked sheave wheels. The "spokey" sort look nicer in my opinion. Both Wellington, Pendarves, Jane no2 and Roskear look out of proportion in my opinion.

The bigger wheels like S Winder and a spindly frame look more Cornish, IMO. It would be interesting to see S winder headgear by itself. Although to demolish a part of it would ruin it's iconic shape.

Having said a modern mine is about getting the job done.

NCK shaft is more of a landmark in my opinion and more "cornish" than a lot of other "monuments"

I vaguely remember NCK before the North Frame was fitted, it had a sort of cantilever set up on the back which I assume was for a capstan or something, the other thing it had was an Engine house that was unique - it was built from mass concrete, I believe it was built in about 4 weeks.

The funny thing is NCK looked bizarre without the North Section as it was out of proportion, being so tall and having nowhere near as much depth as it soes now.

The big problem with NCK is its is just so unique, I can't think of a headframe anywhere that looks vaguely like it, which is whyeverybody sees it as iconic.

I see they are advertising for "Artists" to design public artworks that represent Cornish Icons for the Heartlands project, how about if there is no need for NCK headframe operationally, dismantle it and reerect it in the middle of heartlands, where it will still nearly be on its original site and it could serve a twin purpose as an SRT practice Rig!!!!

Thats a serious amout of painting, its bad enough painting pylons at work!!!

Seriously though, what do you reckon to the idea of relocating it on Robs? They want it to be parkland for all ages! What more of an Icon do you need?

Chavs will climb it and then fall off. Health and safety will go mental, people will start wringing hands. It will get cut up for scrap and then something dynamic and creative made of stainless by some local "artist" of no relevance will take it's place.

Then that will get covered in graffiti

Guys you have solved a huge problem..... build loads of head gears everywhere (thus creating jobs), then leave them for the chavs to fall off (another prob solved), then modify them to make chav proof (more employment), then demolish them for H&S reasons as the chavs still break in and fall off (more employment) , build crappy modern chav proof sculpture (more employment) ...this could catch on as it provides great employment and gets shot of chavs.... excellent!

COUNCILS PLEASE NOTE! 😉
