Anyway back on topic I believ it is the model engine house built on the side of the junction from Carnkie to Redruth.

Where exactly do you mean Knocker?
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Take the road from Carnkie, heading towards Redruth, you get to a T Junction, where you Turn Right to Four Lanes or Left to Redruth (South Downs, SJ Andrews), it is on tthat junction, it replaced a boat that was there because no one could figure out what exactly the boat had to do with anything!

Oh well..... Does any one know of any other similar models around the uk?? i think its rather a nice sign for Redruth.

Oh and for the history nuts amongst you re U571 you were quite right-

U - boat 571.
Built by Blohm and Voss, Hamburg. Laid down on the 22nd May 1940 and launched 4th April 1941.

The U-Boat was commanded by KL Helmut Mohlmann from May 1941 until May 1943, and then commanded by OL Gustav Lussow from May 1943 until the 28th of January 1944, when he and his entire crew were killed when U-571 was attacked by a Sunderland from 461 Royal Australian Air Force flown by F/Lt R D Lucas. West of Fastnet. Two depth Charges were dropped and the U-Boat Blew Up.

U-Boat 571 spent its operational life with 3 U-Flottille, based at Kiel and La Pallice.
