I hope someone can advise. (I am sure they will!) I have a drawing I made of a couple of shafts and a whim circle that I measured up many years ago. Unfortunately, I have not drawn a scale, so as I am sure it is one of two possibilities, can someone suggest a typical diameter of a whim circle, and typical dimensions of a rectangular mine shaft worked by same? Then I can probably come up with the correct scale, and post the drawing on the website. The mine is Gilson's Cove Mine, near Port Quin.

Thanks!

Not quite the same but maybe this will help. The ginn case at Saltom Pit, still recognisable, was about 40 feet diameter, drum about 15 feet, serving a 10 x 8 elliptical shaft (to 456 feet depth).
This pit had many similarities with the Cornish metal mines, the engine house still remaining (just) being built around 1820 to house a Crowther engine when the shaft was deepened.

I just had a good idea. I went to the mine record for Gilsons Cove, switched the map to aerial view, zoomed to max enlargement and scaled the features off the displayed scale. My sketch is at 1:200. Now I just need to add a scale bar, scan, and upload! Thanks for the info - this whim circle is 10 metres across, and the two shafts I drew at approx 2m x 3.5m (no, I didn't lower myself down into them to do a precise measurement!). đŸ™‚

Nice drawing Peter.

What idiot put the coast path through the middle of the whim though! :stupid:

Here a couple of shots of my favourite Horse Whim. I believe it is on East Wheal Falmouth, although the boundaries between mines here are a bit sketchy.
The Whim Platt is approximately (not measured yet) 30 feet dia and the shaft was the usual - for this area - 6 x4 feet. This one was probably a trial and not used for hauling ore. Had they found what they were looking for the shaft would probably have been slashed out to 8 x6 to accommodate extra services. judging by the size of the spoil heap, I would estimate the shaft at no deeper than 60 to 80 feet, not too far below the stream in the bottom of the valley.
It's good that the stone that held the axle tree has not been removed like so many other sites.

That shaft looks like the one above. I noticed that the original sollaring is giving away and has sagged here. It will probably go in the next few years. I have to go back there and look for the adit which is probably right by that house.

I have to come up and poke around the Porth Quin area, apparently there are some very extensive workings. I was looking around Polzeath the other day and found nothing but an adit (bricked up).

The mines I have poked around in that area have been very small scale shafts/winzes/drives indeed.

Hi all, new to the forum and really liking what i see.
Been exploring around Cornwall for the last few years mostly around old wheal Jane, west wheal Jane etc. Always wondered what the location was that Roy posted now it explains it all and Roy i thank you for that was only there just the other day re looking at the location. I'm now trying to locate all shafts within the area and marking them down as i come across them and from the pictures posted located around that area that i know of are 3 - 4 including the pictures all capped 1 just up the road from the picture site as been capped and filled with all sorts of objects just south of that is another 2 both capped one been filled and the other is open but flooded, plenty more to explore and hoping to post what ever i find

Hi stuey

Just wondering did you ever go back and find the adit. I've looked about for a little while now and as of yet no joy in finding it, need to go back as few other locations on my maps i want to look at so thought id ask

Cheers
