Had a slice of luck today. Strolled along to see if I could get a photo of the headgear on what used to be North Roskear shaft before Crofty took it over. You can just see it from the road. The land it’s on is a strictly no admittance..
When I arrived the gates were open and some contractors and a head honcho from Crofty were there. So I strolled in and asked whether it would be okay to take some pictures. After the usual grilling, who was I? why did I want them?, etc, they said okay. They even opened the shaft (very highly secured) and showed me around.

Good One... odd this!!!

I had the same experience exactly 10 years ago on 30.07.98 with same weather... have put 4 pics on from then - old winder, bell codes and inside of the then modern winder!

Nice One Carnkie.... Time flies

They are rightly sensitive about people getting into the site. A couple of the local intellectuals broke in and cut through a 12000 volt cable. I'm not sure whether he's still in Frenchy Hospital in Bristol. 😮 Was the pun intended?

:offtopic: We had some interesting bits and bobs last week to pick up in Bulgaria when the local not so intellectual "free roaming scrap collectors who live on the road" (just being PC) decided to collect the 25KV overhead copper train wires in a siding .... which turned out to be live.... "Presenting Igor... the worlds latest human fuse... Ta Da... BANG!!!!"

Back to Roskear, they were touchy in 98 too as the mine had just closed but a certain well known chap from Crofty was there and had seen me before so let me in as long as not for publishing.... Is the electric winder still there and are the rems of the original steam winder in the adjacent old buildings?? 😉

In answer to your two questions. The electric winder I believe has gone to Crofty. The remains of the original steam winder are still in the old building but are shortly to be moved.

Carnkie, was it a guy from Crofty you saw out there or from Carnon (That site still belongs to Carnon)

Regarding the power incident, that was an amusing one (I work for WPD). The local idiots had been stripping out the mines cabling for a long time up as far as our transformer, they believed our transformer dead and decided to cut out the 11kV feed cable with a hacksaw blade! The kid was fifteen and damn lucky the cable arced out to Earth to the cable sheath, as a result he "only" caught the flashover. He ended up with an 8 week stay in Derriford. The best of it was the day he was in court someone else done exactly the same thing and somehow managed to escape all harm. Whats weven better is the cable was Aluminium NOT Copper and as such he might have got about £2 for the 2 metre length he tried cutting out. Total tosser, but I doubt if he can even manage that anymore!

You sure the winder went to Crofty, last I saw (12 months ago) it was still in the winder shed, which has been smashed to hell.

I'm pretty sure he was from Crofty from the way he was speaking but can't be absolutely certain. And as the contractors were, as you correctly say, from Carnon you have me thinking you may be right.

Thanks for the power incident.

Regarding the winder, it's still in the shed and is apparently going to Crofty. I couldn't get in the shed although a puff of wind will probably blow it down. I think I was incorrect indicate to ICLOk that it was the old winder.

Well there's one thing for certain, they won't find it very easy to break into the shaft.

They won't anymore, the reason its like that is they did manage to break in a few months ago and smashed all the crashdecks up, how and why is a mystery. They actually managed to open the shaft up, why can't these idiots just kill themselves, save a whole lot of hassle for everyone in the long run!

AS you say they won't anymore. Even these idiots would have a problem with this, although a drop down a140 foot shaft would concentrate the mind. Briefly.

I must admit to making a slight boo boo in upoading the photos to the above mine. North Roskear Shaft was never in the above sett. I've made a separate entry in the data base for the shaft with the following brief explanation. I've linked the shaft to the two mines in question.

The shaft was sunk from 1923 onwards and eventually reached about 320 fathoms. Initially it was in the New Dolcoath Sett but that closed in 1930 for lack of new investment. It wasn't very successful producing 170 tons of tin, 20 tons of Wolfram and some arsenic. South Crofty took over the shaft in 1936.

Can the photos be transferred to the shaft album (ICLOK has some in there as well) or is it the long winded method?

I was just about to PM you. Sorry about that but of course being Cornwall The North Roskear Shaft wouldn't be in the same mine. I've deleted all but one of my photos as you have no doubt noticed and uploaded them to the shaft. Thought this was the best way of doing it. Hope you agree. Had to dig out GR. and for New Dolcoath. Used the same one of course.

Strange this... My photo's I took there were all labelled As STH CROFTY NEW ROSKEAR SHAFT.... So I Checked my notes and that was Crofties name for their shaft in the old 'NORTH DOLCOATH' sett I think..... Dines def gives a ref as NEW ROSKEAR SHAFT but I have other references just as ROSKEAR SHAFT

Anyone clarify! Am conflused

North Roskear was the original Sett name, Dolcoath took over the Sett in the early twentieth century, where it became part of New Dolcoath, the shaft was sunk as new Roskear Shaft. subsequently Dolcoath was taken over by Crofty. In 1996 the shaft was deepened by South Crofty to become the new secondary egress with the new winder and headframe, known still as New Roskear Shaft, but part of South Crofty.

It gets quite confusing down here as to the historical ownership. Basically all the mines started as small setts, gradually amalgamating. All the mines that were in the Pool, Tuckingmill, Roskear, Dolcoath areas are now amalgamated into South Crofty

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
