Just for once something to be pleased about in mining.
My first visit to Hatfield Main was with Mr Budge himself at the time the Coalpower deal was going thru and was a flook. A few years on (today), I dropped in again and after simply telling the guys what I wanted was treated to a surface walk having duly met the H & S requirements. (Big thanks to the underground manager 'D') Yep .. more Jam than Hartleys!!
What a change from back then... this is a super pit in the making and everywhere is organised and tidy. When I was there last time it was like the place was holding its breath and had a run down air.... not any more!
All the staff seemed motivated and clear on what's at stake and were pleased to tell me production wise they had 30,000T on hand just waiting for washing over and above normal production!!! The stuff in the pit yard was all new and reflects the go-ahead attitude to make this investment work
These guys seem motivated to make a success of the place, I got a feeling its theirs (the miners) and Coalpowers mine!
Sadly No 1 headgear will be coming down and the adjacent attached buildings have gone already though the shaft is still in use raising coal straight onto the conveyors. It is to be replaced by a vertical lift type tower and whilst my guide was sad he quite rightly said rather that than no mine.... It will allow a substantial increase in coal lifted hence allowing greater production. The headgear will be demolished and a new circular collar made onto which the tower will be built.
The fact is that the investment here in coal and the people is paying off and is a fine example of what can be done...
As for the power station its on its way and this is even more cause for celebration...
The guys there are pragmatic and know whats at stake but I can only want to quote one worker I met in the car park "I got some pride back" nuff said..

I will be going back and I feel this project is a credit to the men and Coalpower alike... I have some good contacts and will be looking to get the drop on news as it happens.

Success to Hatfield, may it long continue!!

This has made my year to date.... 😉 😉 😉 ;D

Great stuff maybe at last british Mining is on the up again. In the past fortnight I've passed 3 lo-loaders heading N through Cheshire, each with a huge new Joy powered face support on. I wonder where they're bound?
We inhabit an island made of coal, surrounded by a sea full of fish. How can we go wrong.......
