what's going on at hopton wood as I went up there yesterday after taking some friends round wapping mine as an easy extension to the day . It now sports a new gate , cctv and an alarm when you loiter by the gate . Needless to say we left with out going underground .

Lots of rumours that the MOD are now using some of the mine as a depot. Could also be that the number of videos / photos of people in the mine on push bikes, using fireworks and spinning burning wire wool (yawn) have pissed off the owners to such an extent that the duty of care bit has been dealt a heavy hand... Sounds like you were quite lucky not to be interviewed by the security team

There has also been a bit of clearing on the way up to it . The foundations of the buildings next to the roadway have vanished .

Tried numerous times, been caught both ends numerous times... the secca that guard the gates told us they were fully sealing every entrance, this was about a year ago, they never did what they told us, but the gates were replaced and the small squeeze under the gate filled in...

I think middleton exploring days are over, when did you take that photo? We have set the alarms off, they are hidden everywhere, under a rock and on top of a block building at the hopton end, its very loud as well!

The increased security I think is partly down to Omya giving up their sub-lease and handing the mine back to Tarmac who we see are a lot keener on security, though if it is the case that the MOD now have an interest in the place too that would explain why the place hasn't been sealed.

Either way, Middleton can no longer be considered accessible as it was in the days of the door being left ajar and is best left alone.

I agree.
There are other places to go and as one door closes another opens.
My advice is keep away.

The via gellia has a full day of mine exploring 🙂 so there really is no need to annoy the security on site  they really aren't too pleasant when they are forced to leave the warmth of their cabin!

Balleye and Silvereye are a good trip, as is spinney and all the other wet holes down the valley 😃 Goodluck is supposed to be a good guided trip, one sunday every month i believe not sure which week of the month first or last if i remember correctly, well worth a 5er!
