I am looking to venture into Jug holes for the first time and was wondering if there was a survey knocking around that I could take a look at. The links to it found in earlier posts don't seem to work. Thanks.

You might still be able to buy the Jug Holes Interpretation Pack from PDMHS perhaps?

Looked online for the pack but haven't had much luck finding it. I believe you can buy it from the museum in Matlock but I would like to see the survey before going all the way up there.

Thankyou!, How do I go about order it as there doesn't appear to be a link to any kind of shop interface?

It's a relatively simple through trip to be honest, one of my favorites, just be careful when its wet as it gets a little slippy and muddy down the slopes, at least one hand line rope is advisable on the initial climb down from the cave opening on the right 🙂 would be happy to join and assist on the route if you need it as i only live a few miles outside of matlock 🙂

I'm relatively new to caving but plan to enter the lower section via the main surface entrance and then exit through the adit. Is the navigation particularly difficult? Is it possible to route find using the survey alone? Thanks

I've always entered at the top and worked my down to the corregated tunnel adit at the bottom of the hill... Its relatively simple to navigate as the main route taken by most is regularly used so obvious to spot, can get a little tricky once at the bottom of the 2nd or 3rd descent but after a little looking around it is, again, rather obvious which way to take! Are you experienced with ropes and SRT? there are anchor points to take different routes down other than free climbing but again i've never bothered, just use a hand line to drop down the initial hole into the system.

I climb quite a bit so I'm familiar with rope techniques, anchors and the such. I don't want to have to lug that much kit through though so I'll stick to just freeclimbing it for now.

yes that's my preference too, leave the kit tied the first rope and haul it back up on the way back to the top of the hill when finished 🙂 happy to help with the route if you feel like you need it anyway! 20 minutes car drive for me

Thanks AR for that doc, it's exactly what I was after. Thanks Praada for the help with the route. I should be okay navigating the caves but thanks for the offers of help, I'm glad to see such a supportive community. I hope to visit the caves sometime in the next week or two and will post an update after I get back. Thanks again all!

Its also well described in "Caves of Derbyshire" which is well worth investing in if you are planning any underground visits in the area

Quick question, How much is this system affected my water? I know that it does not include any major water hazards but I am wondering if the recent rain may have an adverse effect on the conditions inside?

It doesn't flood/sump AFAIK, there's a streamway in the upper series but I can't recall that pooling up even at the far end. There'll be no problems at all with the lower series other than drips!

I was told to take extra care if the stream is running from the top of the hill as you walk down to the cave opening. But i must admit in the 7 or 8 visits that i have made to Jugs this year, the stream hasn't been running to experience what the conditions are like inside. I would certainly suggest at least a rope for initial climb down into the lower system, but i do this when it is dry as well.

It is slippy and muddy more or less constantly inside anyway. If you go on youtube there is a full gopro walk through video which will help navigate from the cave opening to the adit exit tunnel.

I have returned wet and slightly bruised from my trip to Jug holes. My companion and I didn't manage to complete the through trip as we had hoped due to time constraints but we did manage to explore some of the lower working via the adit and poke around in some of the shafts off the main entrance. We both enjoyed the trip and hope to return to complete the through trip sometime in the future and perhaps visit some of the other caves nearby. Thanks to all who provided helped me in the planning for the trip.

Sounds like you had fun, what's the point in it if you don't get a few bruises on the way! Its about an hour through trip once you know the way i take it that you had to climb back out the first drop down into the system then? Not something i've ever tried... I made sure once i was in i wasn't leaving until i found the adit exit 🙂

Does anybody know of any dry mines accessible in the area which i could visit tonight? I've done balleye, masson, jugs, devonshire, wapping, silvereye and groaning tor. I have also done mouldridge a little further down the road at pikehall. Not wanting to travel any further than bakewell ideally, but don't mind if its not much further!

Dunsley Springs , Old Gells, or Slaley Sough in the VG are the obvious ones that spring to mind. Old Ash/Lords and Latex Ladies near Oker, though you'd need to call in at Lobby Farm for the key. Mandale is probably dry at the moment but you now need to contact the DCA a few days in advance and get the lock code, thanks to the fools who've been leaving the gate open....
