Went down a old manganese mine just outside mancetter Warwickshire yesterday. It was a bit of a tight squeeze to get in but once in we could stand in most of it. Not sure when it dates back to so if anyone has any info on it it would be good. Iv uploaded some photos just search purley chase.

See 'Purley Chase Manganese Mine, Mancetter, Warwickshire', Cook, Alan F., Mining History. Summer 2013, Vol. 18 Issue 5, p1-6. 6p. 2 Color Photographs, 5 Black and White Photographs, 3 Maps. PDHMS

Quote:

Abstract: This pillar and stall mineworking has no known archival written record or mine abandonment plan of it origins and ownership. The extraction method was made more difficult because the steep structural dip of between 35 and 40 to the SW, which is similar to the Seven Sisters Cavern at the Wren's Nest, Dudley. Mining was started as a shallow quarry in the valley side of the un-named brook rising in the Slack's Wood, Oldbury Hill area. The valley was dammed in its upper reaches to create Oldbury Reservoir, a canal top-up feeder in 1767. This was drained in the 1990s and is now part of Oldbury Hill quarry. The main lower mine entrance is at OS NGR SP3094795357, and the higher at SP3095295769. A possible crown hole, or other shaft is at OS NGR SP3083896182, which may belong to another mine, but it is more than likely associated with Purley Chase manganese mine.

I've searched for Purley, Purley Chase and for manganese mines beginning with P. Nothing comes up at all.

@Jodex17x do you mind if I move your photos to the mine page? Easier for people to find them there 🙂

We had this email today from the author of mining history.

Hi Andy
Here are the relevant documents.
A word of warning; I nearly died in the cave in 1969-70, I got stuck and no
one knew where I was, the one time I did not tell anyone I was going.
The other risks and hazards are roof falls, large pieces of shale, or
lamprophyre falling on explorers - hard hat essential.
Face & eye protection masks - there are some nasty fungal spores in the air
and they give some people serious lung problems (Aspergillus fungus in
particular). A lot of broken glass in the floor debris - so again risk of
nasty cuts if you trip up.
The lower levels of the cave are usually flooded; when I got in trouble was
after a long drought and the lower levels became accessible. I went down not
realising how dangerous these were. I was used to exploring caves and mine
workings - but it caught me out.
The local farmer is usually amenable to visits if you ask him. If you do not
ask his permission and he sees torchlight or hears noise he usually calls
the police.

This mine is about 200 years old, although it constructed in the "pillar and
stall" mining method - which is strong at supporting large mining voids. It
is old for "pillar and stall", most coal mines have collapsed with this
technique as have some of the limestone mines. The area suffers occasional
earth tremors, and this definitely weakens the pillars. This mining method
is safest when 65% extraction was the maximum, leaving 35% unmined rock to
support the stalls. There are places in the mine where this value is nearer
85% extraction, 15% left as pillars. I fully expect the mine to collapse
further, and each time a pillar fails the stresses in the stall roof change,
thus increasing the risk of a catastrophic collapse. There are signs of that
about 400 m to the NW of mine - a large crown hole exists in the woodland.
I feel it is my legal duty to warn you of these things as a professional
mining engineer and geologist.
Regards
Alan

Interesting point about fungal spores, we're used to seeing all types of fungus underground. Is this risk specific to this mine or a more general risk we ignore a bit perhaps?

If it's directly relevant to the mine, you can attach it to the mine entry in the database. Alternatively, you can put it into your personal files section of "My Aditnow", then copy and paste a link into it into the thread?

I have been in some of the Quarries near Mancetter, this is the first time I heard of a mine in that area, apart from coal.

Do the other two prefer Lesley Judd ?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
