Err-- maybe the carts are stacked cos there ain't no horses?? - Think I might know where this is, concrete raft over the shaft (-under a school playing field --) will try and take the camera over there soon.

I can see three horses. Possibly a weekend? No coal to be hauled away, and the horses in stables or a field.

The main shaft is now smack bang in the middle of a small residential estate, under a junction in the road. There is absolutely nothing left whatsoever to indicate that there was ever a mine here.

Any idea what the concrete raft is behind the school swimming pool beside Walker & Howells?.

I'd need to go and look to jog my memory, but there's a fenced off area right next to Walker and Howells (on the school land) that is one of the air shafts (there were about three or four) for the main drainage adit from Waterloo Colliery (Gisbourne's).

The first photos on the Whaley site are of Waterloo Pit (aka Gisbournes), however, if you go to the second page, it shows some photos of Wharf Pit (aka Whaley Colliery). They both worked the same seams I believe, either side of the syncline the main shafts being no more than 300 yards or so apart.
