If you want to know anything about Devis hole you need to speak to a guy called Pete Row, the man is a legend in Swaledale. Sadly I do not have a contact number for him. He may be reached through swaledale Mountain rescue team. Or get to Reeth and ask a local!

Guys, just briefly ...

the repeated user name has happened on a couple of occasions before and has been resolved with no problems. Feel free to raise the issue with any admin if your not happy with a name similar or exactly the same as your own.

Yep dave has come in big time, bit of a digging project for someone now. Apparently you can also see the collapse on the surface so quite a lot of material may have run down the incline too 😮

Here are some recent February pics from Mine-Explorer http://www.mine-explorer.co.uk/view_picture.asp?id=23322

A few of us may have a go at digging it in the summer (if someone doesn't beat us too it 😉 ) as it has put an end to the excellent Hard Level through trip for now 😞

Jim

Much as I love through trips, surely Hard Level to the bottom of the incline and back would be twice as good 😉

If you are digging it, I would be hapy to come down and help as my only real digging experience is in caves, so I'd be interested to see how it all works in a mine...

I sent an email to the editor of the NMRS newsletter, on account of them having recently published an item about the restoration of the Brandy Bottle portal and probably having contact details for whoever restored it (who would hopefully be interested in digging out the collapse too)

Never heard anything back though.

I have no idea who's active in Swaledale, although from things I saw just this weekend elsewhere people clearly are.

As i mentioned earlier I think pete Row has been digging down there, he found a way through to Wensley dale but for sure I would help out with a dig.

That's the Yorkshire Holy Grail isn't it but I'm fairly certain that it hasn't been found.

Sorry, I've come across Peters name many times in association with Moldywarps surveys before, but never met him in person.

This is worth a read if you have time.

I was just thinking no-one in this or the ME forum seems to be owning up to being involved with Brandy Bottle, as lots of people are showing an interest in helping sort it out (myself included)

The said Mr Row had been digging for 3 years trying to force a way through but gave up. With a change of heart and direction started again and within one hour had found the holy grail! When I was up that way a week ago (not underground) there did not appear to have been any traffic to the entrance!

I've got MSG12 (Nov 2008 ) which talks about a dig lasting several years which is bypassed by Peter in three weekends.

Presumably this is the same one.

That was just into new ground though wasn't it, not daylight.

Anyway, there was an interesting article once in that august mining history journal that is the Telegraph Gardening section re the connection, albeit coming from the other side.

Here it is: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/3298636/Tunnel-visions.html

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
