Just fished out my copy of Bird's Yesterdays Golcondas

Browsing through it I see the pics of Odin Mine and the Cartgate, as it was in the late 60s or early 70s. The road over

I was up there a while ago and trying to picture how my recollection of the site fitted with its current configuration.

What, if anything, survives there?

The cartgate arching is intact, as is the fine stone stempling on the way to it, or was when I was on an inspection visit a couple of years back.

This was discussed at the DCA meeting yesterday, the National Truss still don't want anyone in there, we (DCA) are trying to prod them into action on this.

Always remember, nature is in charge, get it wrong and it is you who suffers!.

Really don't understand what's taking so long, as the inspections that took place were regular and as thorough as was possible. Even risk assessments for documenting/re-surveying were submitted, though seemingly going into a blacker hole than Odin itself. The remedial work could be easily achieved with a minimum of investment and skilled labour, so I can only asume that the delays are legal/liability-related. That said, other jobs got the green flag almost immediately, so it's not all bad.

In one word, "managementosphere", those strange, rarefied heights where you send things up and they disappear out of sight and never seem to come back to earth!

I've got an action from the DCA meeting to follow up on this, I will be passing on that there is disquiet from the underground exploration community about the lack of decision one way or another, but also giving suggestions for a way forward.

I was under the impression that the National Trust were looking for some fairly unlikely to achieve reassurances about there being no further movement...
So official access was unlikely in the short-medium term...
However access is through an open stope in the middle of no-where...so you pay your money and take your choice...

That's not the case as far as I'm aware. The NT are obviously concerned about whether any further collapse is likely, which is why there have been a number of inspection visits which I have been involved with in my official capacity, but the person "on the ground" for the NT is a caver himself so understands that no-one will give a cast-iron assurance that there will be no further movement underground. I'm not going to give any timescale as to when there may be developments but I have been actively pursuing this today.

As for the fact the entrance is in an open stope, well, yes people could choose to ignore the NT's request not to go on, just as the NT are perfectly at liberty to choose to put a permanent barrier in to block all access....

Apologies if there's the possibility of some change in the access situation...

I've had it from the DCA Access officer to pretty much forget about access being re-instated through NT...so was just relaying that info...

Its 4 years now since the initial collapse...what are they looking for changing in order to re-instate access? Is it something people could help with?

I don't know what Ewen's reason for that opinion is but all I'll say is that I don't share it and I'm still working towards trying to get access restored in some shape or form.

As for the collapse, the area of concern is the outbye side of it which is backfill in the vein, as is all of the initial section of level. If that isn't stable then there's a very real possibility of the hole getting bigger, worst case being with someone stood on it, so the inspection visits have been monitoring that and looking for any sign of shifting.
