The Fritchley Sough discharges into a stream below Mill Green. Approx. 250m further north (upstream) there are two adjacent soughs, well constructed with stone walls and a stone roof. They are east of an old tip and south of a small field by an engine shed at a tramway junction. One sough (dry) trends to the north east and possible links to the dry brook south of the old Warner's Quarry. The other sough, with a good flow of water curves round to the north west. Both appear to be accessible. Does anyone know the history of these soughs, route and purpose? I suspect they are associated with quarry drainage!

On a quick scan of Nellie Kirkham's paper on the Crich mines she only mentions two other soughs, Ridgeway (discharging into the Derwent below Wakebridge) and Hollins, with its tail in the area of Hollins Farm.

A quick look on Old Maps shows what looks like a quarry tip in this area adjacent to the tramway with a watercourse emerging from it, so I'd guess what you've seen are culverts under this?

Are these the features in question?
Located upstream of where the footbridge cross the brook, and long the bottom of the brook.

Yes they are. The sough on the right appears to have been excavated by removing a couple of roof stones.
If the one on the left emanates from Hilt's Quarry is the water radioactive I wonder?
I have some photos which I will post tomorrow evening.

Ok I should have read the instructions! Here is the view down the entrance to the left hand sough:

If anyone knows where it goes I would be very grateful for some information.

As others have commented it is highly likely to be a drain from the quarry.

Slight error there, larker! That is the right hand culvert - the left hand one has the running water and curves away to the north-west (towards the former Hilts Quarry?).

I'm pretty sure these are both culverts, not soughs. As far as I can work out, the right-hand one is fed by the stream that sometimes runs from near Old/Warner Quarry. Have a look over the wall just below and opposite the engine shed. The left-hand one is the tail of a culvert which runs down Dimple Lane. Have a look at the side of the road just below the entrance track to Hilts Quarry, there's usually plenty of water going down a grille there.

Many thanks Lampwick. I'll take a look the next time I'm walking in the area. You confirm our suspicions.
