Hello all,
I am trying to find information on the Robinettes drift mine-SK 491419. When was it opened , Who owned it, how extensive were the workings, when did it close, etc.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated.
Thank you
Badman.

The Robinettes drift was constructed around 1953 as part of a major investment scheme by the NCB No.5 Area to access dwindling reserves and to prolong collieries' lives.

The drift was part of Oakwood Grange Colliery and was from the surface into the Piper seam to provide ventilation to reserves in the southern district. An upcast fan-drift, it was driven in a SSE direction at a gradient of about 1-in-3.5, with a secondary drift close to the adit mouth driven SE at a gradient of 1-in-5 to the Low Main seam.

Oakwood Grange, which commenced production in 1932, merged with nearby Cossall Colliery in 1956 but the Robinettes drift remained in use until 1966 when Cossall Colliery closed. There was another shaft, Turkey Fields, around half-a-mile to the NE which was also used by Cossall Colliery for ventilation until its closure.

In 1967 The Robinnettes drift was stopped off at 27.43 m from the adit mouth and filled with gravel from the stopping to the surface.

I explored the site of the drift in 2006, taking several photo's, and made another visit along with ICLOK about 3 years ago, and a third visit last autumn. The site is very overgrown now although the buildings are extant, but the area is proposed for opencast mining so an early visit is recommended.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
