I was out doing a lengthy walk yesterday and noticed three mine which are located along the western end of Moss Rake - to the east of Royal Oak Mine.
The first one is at SK1375 7970 and comprises a coe, buddle dam with two internal / adjoining depressions and a probable crushing circle.

The second and third sites are slightly to the west of the one above. One comprises a shaft in a coe and the other comprises a shaft in a coe in a belland yard.

Hopefully I've done the links right first time this time.

Any ID's much welcome

Also there is a small building to the northeast ish of Royal Oak, looks a bit like a magazine, although I've not seen any reference to a magazine at Royal Oak.

I've just had a quick read and the mines it describes are to the west and northwest of the one above. It sounds like a nice walk, although I'm currently writing up my journal log for my website from yesterday (a bit longer than the 4mile walk) which includes some of those mines (was originally planned to include all of them, but I started out late) and a load more.

I've got a feeling these mines or a better idea of names may be in the recent Derbyshire Soughs book for Castleton - which I've lent out.

These mines are mentioned in the lead legacy report and the PDHMS paper of Peak Forest area remains but they aren't any names.

I've got a feeling the first one may be a ore processing site and not a 'proper' mine because I couldn't see any actual shaft location in the area

Lee - the section with the buddle dam and crushing circle is Clayton's Ground. Not sure on the other one - I also have some photos of that one with the square spoil heap, and had a vain attempt to lift a sleeper on my own last year! Did managed to drop a stone under though, and it went.

I've asked Jim Rieuwerts and Chris Heathcote on the name of that one, and neither can supply a name - it seems there are no records available.

Cheers

I'm sending you a private email giving details of how to contact my old friend of many years, who opencasted Moss Rake and around Eldon Hill for fluorspar for around forty to fifty years. He amassed a lot of information from mining in the area and may be able to help you.

Phil,

Thanks for the name of Claytons Ground. I will add the photos and my sketch for the site - It's always nice finding a nice little site you didn't expect to see. Originally I incorrectly assumed it was New Rake Bottom, although that was because I didn't have a NGR for that site.

As for the other mine(s) that's what I was expecting, although if we can't find out a name then I'll eventually put them in to the rake(s).

I did think of having a look at the one with the wooden sleepers but I wasn't too sure how safe it looked

Cheers
Lee

New Rake Bottom is the series of opencuts and ruins close to Upper Cross opencast, branching off due west from Moss Rake around Nether Cross. Apparently the opencuts there may be extremely old and worthy of some archeological study. Unfortunately they're currently holding a truckful of barbed wire, wood and other rubbish and I didn't fancy even getting close! Also the scene up there around the quarries is decidely wild-west at the moment, so be prepared for questions if large men arrive quickly... đŸ˜‰

I got a look at the upper / western area derelict looking buildings by Batham Gate but didn't go any further easterly; and it definitely looked more wild west like and I got the same impression of that area from iclok.

Is the Upper Cross opencast the one by the Batham Gate road? I've got a few photos (taken from the path and road). I did get an odd look from a truck driver passing, yet the local walking her dog seemed pleasant enough

Yeah - if you're looking uphill, (SW) at the bend in the road, Upper Cross is the right-hand quarry, Nether (Kitty) Cross and Hall's Venture sites are in the left-hand. As long as you stick to the public footpaths, all should be OK though.

Our group had permission to be up there, which is why we've not had any problems, but lower down the rake it's getting a bit dodgy, and we're keeping away for now, just as a courtesy really.

Should be alright along the paths, its just theres been a few incidents recently with a fire and a few thefts from whats locally known as star quarry ( referrs to past owners), which is the lower quarry on the rake
[i]I am always upto my neck in it!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
