I was having a look round the east end of Middleton Wood earlier this week, particularly to check out the 3 shafts near the wall of the field below Moor Jepson Mine, as shown on Roger Flindall's 1972 sketch plan. The Barmaster's 25" map shows them as being on Silver Eye vein. The 2 outermost shafts are open, but intriguingly the middle one has been covered with a well-made concrete cap with a central access point fitted with a metal lid and some sort of locking device. Does anyone out there know anything about this particular shaft?

Not completely sure but it is likely to be the second exit shaft to Goodluck mine. That was on the Silver Eye vein. That was not the lid that we put on it 30 odd years ago but I think it was replaced due to vandalism.
It would explain why it was locked!
Silver Eye is ungated.

You are absolutely correct Staffs'
Beyond that, Silver eye is but a stones throw (figuratively at that height above the via Gellia road.)towards Cromford, and Gells adit 4 / 500 m. further. both well worth a nosey!

Many thanks for the info. I should have guessed it was connected to Good Luck as it is directly above the adit. Re Gells and Silver Eye, yes, full of interest, both amongst my favourites.
