My advice is buy new

You dont know how a 2nd hand one has been treated.

Its an important item and i wouldnt want to trust my life with a 2nd hand item. Same goes for nearly every other SRT item.

I bought all my kit off of rig systems and they did good prices, tel: 02085 153 999 they supply emergency services with their kit as well as the public

Good advice - heed it and it might just save your life.

or go to one of the well known caving suppliers who will do a deal on a complete rig

Caving Supplies,
Bernies,
Inglesport,
Cave and Climb Cheddar
Singing River
or even Caving Gear supplied by Miles just up the road from you http://www.caving-gear.co.uk/page.asp?id=1

If I recall correctly Hitch n Hike do discounted complete bundles starting at around £210. A harness by itself isn't going to let you do much more than dangle 😉

Even adding jammers doesn't seem to let me do much more!

Personally if I saw a second-hand harness/jammer/whatever that was obviously in good nick and barely used I probably wouldn't be overly worried about buying it however you still see plenty people about using twenty year old harnesses so going out of your way to save twenty quid on something that there's every chance will last you throughout your exploring life seems a bit of a trivial economy.

Steve

Buy a Singing River harness if you can find one. By far the most comfortable. The latest Petzl one's are crap in my view.

Don't do it.
I have been caving / mine exploring / digging ect since before "SRT" was invented and actually built my own ropewalking rigs before Petzl began to be imported.
I'm also the owner of the 20 year plus harness RV mentioned in the above post.
In many decades I have only ever owned one harness and I have only just replaced it late last year. I felt comfortable with it over this length of time because I look after all my outdoor gear.

One of our "team" has a singing rock, to me it's over complex and bulky compared to Petzl.

A sit harness will last you a very very long time if you take care of it. The cheaper Petzl one is fine. I would not advise buying second hand because when you are hanging 200 foot off the deck the last thing you want on your mind is....I wonder if someone took a leader fall on this or spilt acid / alkali from a cell on it.

Buy a new Petzl, look after it and enjoy yourself, at less than the price of a pint per year of use you know it makes sense.

Agreed it is a little bulky, however it's nice and comfy. You lot always complain about certain parts of yourselves getting pinched in certain ways, mine is as pleasurable as lying down in a silk hammock with RJV serving you iced Martinis.

Think Angelina Jolie, Kylie Minogue or even Thora bloomin Hird would stike most people as a better choice of servant but never mind El Dubiouso!

What Blackshiver says re Singing Rock which are a complete faff and nowhere near as nice as the bog-standard Petzl.

Oh, here's a thought. If you would like a genuine, vintage / retro, one owner Petzl in white with a personal guarantee that it's not took a leader fall or had acid spilt on it - make me an offer over thirty quid. Hell, I'll even throw in a nice big length of carefully looked after 1987 vintage 10mm Edelrid Super Static with a lovely patina of scuffs and a few burn-mark highlights.
Genuine reason for sale - bought 200M of 8mm Beal (this is exceptional value / lasts a lifetime - because if you go undergound with anyone else they alway's seem to want to use their own ropes for some reason).
Ask RJV, this is a genuine offer.

I'm with blackshiver on this one.

Whilst the chances of you actually dying because you've bought a second hand harness are pretty slim; you'll just never know if it's taken a massive fall or has spent 10 years sitting in direct sunlight (ok it might be a bit faded if this is the case) or had something nasty spilt on it.

OK, it's for mine exploration use so you're not going to be taking any big shock loadings on it (see the thread about slings for cowstails for an idea of what a shock loading can be), but all the same. For the saving you'll make I'd buy something you can trust implicitly. And it'll last you years and years.

I'd only buy secondhand if I knew the original owner (and it wasn't Vanoord ;)) and knew it was kosher. Even then there can be problems you can't see - Petzl stop hairline cracks for example.

However on the Singing Rock point I've known one or two people who've got them and they think they're tremendous; comfortable, easier to put on than Petzl Fractios (how can what is basically two loops get so twisted...) and cheaper.

There's a case with harnesses for actually going to a olde worlde shoppe and trying a few on.

Having seen the erm..."clothing" you and your accomplice have taken too wearing recently I am beginning to wonder just what types of erm..."harnesses" and "shops" you are referring too.
Stick to Bernies or Inglesport Steve, the changing rooms are (relatively) safe there.

Odd that, the local bike shop would part exchange any bike except any ridden by my little brother.

WHAT UTTTER AND COMPLETE CARP!!!

I've got a singing rock harness (The yellow one) well when I say "old" its only 3/4 years old)) and I get on with it fine!!

I've done countless trips, mines all over the place and even the odd c**e (we are allowed to use that that word here, aren't we?).

My SRT kit is beautiful, it allows me to go down as well as up and is comfy!!

So "Yar boooo sucks!" to all those who diss the singing rock harness!!

I bought it on the recommendation of well known "most fearless mine explorer in all christendom" (The Lord Mouldington) and notice that the "venerable" (Simply Exploring) has one as well.

If its good enough for them, its good enough for me!!

Try as many as you can before you buy (that's what I did) and get the one that YOU feel most comfortable in!

Shouty! Feel like I've just been assaulted by the reader's comments section of the Daily Mail website...

My Superavanti regularly gets used in mines and the occaisional cave on narrow technical pitches, big shafts, long low crawls and for mile-upon-mile of underground walking and its never anything less than comfortable and most importantly it has a very low profile & I consequently barely notice its there.

My one experience of the Singing Rock harness is spending 30 minutes stood on a viaduct on a cold November night finding the buckles a complete pain in the arse and there just seemed far too much of it generally. I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole given the choice.

In fairness though the owner gets on well with it so each to there own. However wrong they might be!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
