what is the current status of Odin mine? I see some pics but they date from the 1980s

Not been but it is accessable. There's vague talk of an AN trip there in the spring(?).
A very good photo of the Cartgate Chamber appeared on UKCaving recently: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rob_eavis/5131897890/

I went to Windy Knoll with a school trip in the late 1960s, picked up a sample of elaterite which I still have!

I have it in mind that there was a lower entrance in the early 1970s when I was most active in caving, but I could be mistaken

I suppose you could consider Trickett sough to constitute a lower entrance, but as far as I know it's blocked before you get into the mine.

Seriously, there's only been the one entrance into the mine in modern times to the best of my knowledge. The main route through to the cartgate is still do-able and the pitch anchors are in good condition. I understand it is still possible to get into the lower levels but it's "interesting" down there....

I'm guessing from what I've read it's an SRT trip?

You can ladder the cartgate trip if you prefer, you need a 15' for the entrance pitch then an 30' for the main pitch - after that, it's scrambles and short free-climbs to get to the cartgate chamber. It does have the advantage of not clagging up your SRT kit with the infamous Odin mud.....

A couple of years ago I checked out current explorations of Odin Mine for Jim Rieuwerts. I noted then that Tim Webber of the Sheffield University Speleological Society was active here and exploring the lower levels. This is mentioned on his website
http://www.timwebber.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/proj.html
but it has not been updated to include the promised surveys and rigging diagrams.

I will, I will, I'm drowning in work at the moment (no bad thing in these times) but will make more of an effort this coming year :flowers:

I fancy going underground in the New Year while I'm home, sod the SRT though. Stabbed myself through the hand trying to get my crampon into the prussik loop in the early 70s, dangerous bloody stuff 😛
