AR - any info you can provide would be much appreciated 'cos I don't want to plan a 2 day weekend of mine exploring if there's no mine to explore... 😉

The original plan I think was:

One day: Masson / Gentlewomans - Youds level

Other day: Odin Mine

Looking at Phil's photos, I think a blocked winze has unblocked itself but I can't rule out further collapses. I'm hoping to see Phil on Monday and can discuss it with him then but at the moment I wouldn't count on Odin being in a fit state for a visit in April - remedial works may require agreement from both the National Trust (as landowners) and English Heritage (the mine is an ancient monument). Knotlow could be an alternative, if you want to get muddy the Hillocks-Knotlow through trip is a possibility, not done Meccano passage myself but I'm told it's quite sporting....

Sorting out a date would be good.

We can worry about where to stay once that's done. Lets face it, the area isn't that big.

Just to throw another place in, I camped opposite the Manifold Inn a few years back.
Most pleasant.

Do 'The Orpheus' allow a few tents? or have beds for the period?

Hello everyone - I finally joined up at last - long overdue.

I was asked to post some photos of the recent collapse at Odin, discovered by us last week, and also to pass on the latest DCA request that everyone (sadly) stay away from the mine until assessment and stabilisation work has been completed. This is reiterated by the landowners, the National Trust, and also English Heritage, as the site is a SSSI and a Scheduled Monument.

Having seen the collapse myself, it's definitely not stable, and although potentially interesting from an archaeological point of view, is not really fit for through-trips at the moment. As I was about to embark on a long-term photographic project there, I'm as miffed as anyone else about the restriction, but the long-term future of the mine and its future visitors is the most important issue really. It could turn out for the better in the long-run - who knows? It's a dynamic environment, and liable to change without warning.

I've just posted the photos of the collapse in the Odin user album.

Many thanks

Perhaps it would be prudent to make a list of those who definately want to go with a list of any dates that they can't do and once we've go a few names we can think about setting a firm date.

Once we know that the trip is a goer and have a rough idea of numbers we can start thinking about where to stop and what trips to do.

Ideally it would be nice to have some local knowledge and there does seem to be a few local names within the thread but failing that we can resort to what we all hopefully do on a regular basis, namely finding a hole and seeing what's in it. A good ol' bit of exploring and all that!

To start:

RJV - can't do weekend of 2/3 April.

Hello and thanks for the info Phil.

Presumably, as you indicate, this won't be a permanent restriction. All the best for the stabilisation work and getting access sorted again.

Shall we just bit the bullet and say:

21/22 May.

That seems to be the one that the majority of people who've voiced a preference have suggested.

Right then.

20/21 it is.

1 day: Masson / Gentlewomans - Youds level

2nd day: Something else

I'll add it to the events list now

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
