Weren't we going to do the Easter weekend? 23/24 April? Or would that be really busy - perhaps 30/31st April would be better.

I agree though; let's pick a date and I'll get it posted up.

both of those dates are going to hit the bank holidays- i don't mind but it's worth bearing in mind as Castleton will be heaving 😠

The TSG hut, otherwise known as the Chapel, is a good place to stay. It is smack bang in the centre of Castleton, 50 yards from various pubs that do food(And beer!), and if your lucky on Sunday morning, the hot roast beef will be out of the oven in time for breakfast at the newsagents around the corner, but it has been a while since last had one, so no promises.

If you've got a scrubbing brush handy, bring it along, you'll need it to wash off in stream after trip to Odin. Glourious Derbyshire mud...

Ditto about going with the flow.

Just bear in mind that the honeypots of the Hope Valley, Bakewell and Matlock will be very busy on any Bank Holiday weekend.

well, just to throw another place into the mix- there's a good camping barn/campsite at Pindale- nice walk to the castleton pubs!

RJV - The Cottage Warden's email address for staying at PDMHS Magpie Mine Field Centre (Agent's House) is on the PDMHS website under the "Contact Us" section as follows:

MagpieBookings🇦🇹pdmhs.com

N.B. 🇦🇹 to be replaced by an @ symbol to obtain the correct email address - this is to minimise email addresses being harvested for junk mail.

The cottage warden is Mave Luff who incidently has been seriously ill for the past year or more. If you have problems contacting her please send me a PM and I can let you have her private email address. As far as I can remember, it is £3 a night for PDMHS members and £6 a night for non-members. There is a shower, W.C., running water and electricity (generator), for more details please contact Mave. Remember that the cottage gets fully booked for Bank Holidays early.

Toadstone - the old pub that was in Sheldon village before the "Cock and Pullet" opened was a beerhouse/alehouse (there is a difference - too long an explanation for me to put on here!) in the cottage next to it walking up the hill, it was called the Devonshire Arms and was run by Vince and his two sisters in the front parlour of their cottage, the beer was served in pink jugs with white handles and lips, poured straight out of barrels into the jugs, the barrels being kept in a larder style room to the side of the parlour. Woe betide anyone moving a chair out of place nearer to the open fire black-leaded range, as Vince bodily removed one from the chair and placed both you and the chair back in it's original position! I understand that this pub closed around 1972.

Regarding catering, Magpie cottage has two well equiped kitchens for self-caterers. Alternatively if one wanted to dine out without driving, one can walk the footpath to Sheldon village and eat at the "Cock and Pullet" who have their own hens supplying free range eggs, home cured bacon and home- made black puddings. Monyash is a short car journey from Magpie Cottage where is found the "Bull's Head" another pub that caters well, but can get crowded at Bank Holidays. Similarly there are a lot of eating places at Bakewell, a short car journey away, where also can be purchased the famous Bakewell Puddings, but again gets crowded at Bank Holidays.

If I can suggest, one of the best times of the year to visit Magpie Mine is May/June when all the wild flowers are out such as cowslips, wild pansies, orchids and the hawthorn blossom.

Trust this information helps.

We need to pick a date for this :)

23/23 April - Easter - likely to be heaving busy
30 April / 1 May - bank holiday - likely to be heaving busy

I can't do 8/9 May

So 14/15 May?

Is that too close to the N Wales long weekend which will be in June again?

my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

It will.

I used to live in the Peak District (Hathersage) and it was impossible to cross the main road on a Bank Holiday, due to nose to tail traffic.

Any campsite within reasonable distance of the caving/mine areas will be booked up solid. Sorry to be negative, but I reckon more people will be looking for a cheap holiday at the moment.

Another possibility for camping is the Miners Standard Winster....

There are other campsites around, one at Blackwell near Taddington comes to mind, plus the Bull I'th' Thorn and Duke of York on the A515 both do camping. The Ashford in the Water campsite is usually full at bank holidays due to being the closest to Bakewell and I think the Hope valley ones tend to be similarly full. There is one possibility for informal camping at Great Hucklow, but it's by no means certain the owner would be amenable - I'd need to make enquiries.

Otherwise, I'd suggest pick a non-bank holiday weekend.....

14th/15th May are bad for me (both) and bank holidays are way out.

21st/22nd May isn't looking bad yet and then there's another damned bank holiday the following weekend.

Hello again darkness, my old friend...

Going by Phil's description of what's happened I strongly suggest a plan 'b' is in place, I don't like the sound of what's happened at all and there could be more collapses. I'll speak to Phil next week and see exactly how bad it is.

It looks like 21/22 would suit a few more people than other weekends.

AR - any info you can provide would be much appreciated 'cos I don't want to plan a 2 day weekend of mine exploring if there's no mine to explore... 😉

The original plan I think was:

One day: Masson / Gentlewomans - Youds level

Other day: Odin Mine

If it's SRT you want, then Maskhill is just up the road from Odin.
Or Oxlow....

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
