I still do not see why they want to take down those headframes, they are pretty much one of the finest looking sets of headframes in the world and one of the most amazing landmarks any town could wish for.

Realistically speaking, I think they'd look good as an entrance to an industrial estate.

Probably because they do not wish to pay to maintain them in a safe state, nor pay for the public liability insurance. It can cost you a lot of money (and very bad press) if little Jonny manages (despite notices, fences etc) to climb up and fall off.

Although they look in reasonable condition, things are pretty bad & would be looking at considerable costs to put "right".
The Coal Authority have tried various ways of marketing these impressive structures but to no avail. They even suggested that Notts Fire & Rescue use them for training purposes, but their H&S guys said "too risky".

Its a shame really, but as usual English Heritage keen to put labels on with no attempt to actually do anything! :curse:

I've been up, they're sound. Not a spot of rust on them...

And that doesn't surprise me, everyone who is local with an angle grinder has been there, the place is ruined.

When we visited the Coal Authority said that bits were "falling off" the headsticks, particularly the downcast shaft.

Agree with the place being ruined, anything of value has been stripped from the winders, switchgear, etc (see my pics in the Clipstone users album- apparently I could make a link here, but...?). Shame, even if the buildings couldn't be saved the winders should have been, but thats English Heritage for you, list the building & then prevent shuttering, etc to be put on to stop unauthorised entry because its a listed building! 😠

Nah, the downcast shaft is sound too, but I did once see a picture of part of the building fenced off inside, I think a single bolt fell off or something silly. Upcast is sound and solid.
