The winder and a hydraulic engine were installed in 1879. Water to drive the system came from dams on surface.

The Whales

Looking from a 'modern' 1940s working into a working from the 1890s in the Unteres Lager (bottom slate bed) across the Kaiser Wilhelm adit showing the Whales which are a distinctive geological feature in this mine.

Unteres Lager 1914, bolting and Whales

Working this part of the Unteres Lager (bottom slate bed) was finished in 1914. The bolting looks impressive.
The Whales are a distinctive geological feature in this mine and are exposed over a distance of some 320 metres in this working.
