Today`s announcement of the closure of Hatfield Colliery, along with the announcements this month of the closures of Kellingley and Thorsby and the mothballing of Aberpergwm, this is the end of deep mined coal in the UK,

Just a handful of Small underground mines remain and the opencasts, and with the proposed closures of old coal fired power stations, these remaining mine`s and opencast`s are working on borrowed time as the market is disappearing,
Some of the Smallmines may limp on with the sales of housecoal, but the writing is on the wall for most.

There are six small mines: Ayle, Dan y Graig No.4, Eckington, Hilltop, Monument, Nant hir No.2.

Total employees (surface and underground) probably somewhere between 75 and 100 with Nant hir No.2 being the largest at about 30.

In view of the price premium on anthracite, the two Welsh ones may have the longest lives subject to size of take and rate of extraction.

Crofton's extended share offer closes tomorrow - wonder if they've raised sufficient capital to start work?

Even with the new relaxed mining regulations, it'll become increasingly difficult to obtain qualified men (especially for officials, surveying, etc), provide viable rescue cover, etc.

Additionally, the second hand equipment market must be shrunk to the point where sourcing machinery will become an additional problem.

I understood that Hopewell/Phoenix had restarted.

Hopewell is essentially a museum mine that produces small quantities of coal is my understanding - but I stand to be corrected.

Under the previous owner, Robin Morgan, the Coal Authority employee who posts on the Welsh Coal Mines Forum as Cookie commented on that forum that Robin Morgan occasionally declared small quantities of coal to the Coal Authority. Have the new owners stepped up production to genuinely commercial tonnages?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
