I am new to the site, retired with a lot of time to explore the surrounding area. I am interested in the former Six lane ends Colliery at Flockton which is only three miles from where :-[I live. Please can someone tell me exactly how to get to the former mine. There have been references on your site but not exactly how to get there. Help would be very much appreciated: I know how to get to Six Lane Ends but not the actual site. Also where is the Tramway in relation to the mine?????

The colliery site (later Waterloo Colliery) is in the apex to the south of the junction of Windmill Hill Lane and Crawshaw Lane. There is probably not much to see of the site, and it is now occupied by some barns etc.

Do you mean the tramway from Six Lanes End? it went SW down an incline from the colliery following the line of Windmill Hill Lane to the bend in the road at the bottom.

Flockton Tramway started at Flockton Lane End Colliery (opposite Lane End Farm east of the village along the main road). This tramway includes the viaduct and short tunnel, it heading northish pass the west side of the prison to a wharf on the canal at Horbury Bridge

Thanks for this...just one more query then I will be happy 😉. I have seen photos of the viaduct. Is it still visible and where would the best vantage point be to view it??::)

By the look of recent photos on here it is still extant:

There are all sorts of interesting little mining remnants in the area, happy hunting!

::thumbup: Thanks for the info. I drove past Bar Lane where the viaduct was situated this morning and could see the viaduct through the hedge. What looks like the actual wooded mine area is gated off as private property but there looks like a path of sorts through a nearby field. Thanks for the info on Six Lane Ends and for the map which gives more details of where the mines were. My interest has sprung from doing my Family History revealing a few generations of coal miners. My Grandad who died in 1975 worked for NCB at Shuttle Eye Colliery for over 50 years!! Will do more research along with site visits and take photos when I find the time.

There should be a path (prob overgrown) which takes you the the centre of the Lane End site (includes remains of the Beam Engine House and later colliery building). The site on the northern end is very likely to be overgrown at this time of year, you can get a few across the fields from the back of the site.

Or if you know who's land the viaduct is on, you can always ask.
The tunnel (or gated entrance) is next to where the public footpath crosses the lane to the west of the prison site.

Welcome to the site, 'TizzyWizzy'.
If you contact me I can help you with maps etc. for that area.
John Goodchild has written several leaflets on this area but unfortunately does not include any maps for you to see what he is talking about.

I have an abandonment plan (surface overlay) of 6 lane Ends. As far as I am aware, the site was opencasted and restored several years ago. I you would like me to scan it for you, send me your address and I will post it to you, my email is [email protected]

cheers Cyril.

ps I also know of old mining remains in emroyd wood at Middlestown. some of my pictures are on there. If you would like to have a scout around I am willing to show you .

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
