Hi everyone. I have just found this wonderful site. For my sins, I am Chairman of The Durham Mining Museum. Our initial aim was to document and record all available info on all forms of mining in the 4 northern counties of England (Cumberland, Westmoreland, Northumberland & Durham) plus small parts of North Yorkshire and North Lancashire. All forms of mining include coal, ironstone, lead zinc, silver, copper, slate, anhydrite, barium carbonate, witherite, salt, potash, gypsum, fluorite and fireclay.
To date, our website ( www.dmm.org.uk ) contains around 95,000 HTML pages of info and photographs, but at the moment these pages are mainly of coal mining. The webmaster uploads around 200 additional pages every month. We have been told that we have the largest private website in Europe.
Anyone willing to share underground mining photos with us would be most welcome if they can contact me. Every photo used is heavily watermarked and credited with the copyright holder. We can also include contact details if the copyright holder is willing to share or sell there photos to other enthusiasts.
We have a small exhibits museum in Spennymoor Town Hall. Opening times Mon-Fri 12 noon to 4pm + Sat 10am to 2pm. Closed bank holidays. Admission FREE but a donation would be appreciated.
Thankyou for reading this.
