Hello,

I am an ex miner, I have an interest in keeping our heritage alive by writing a book about the Collieries I worked in, I started life as a haulage lad, afterwards I became a Coal Hewer, I worked on a 5 man team with my Father,

If he was a hewer, it will be from the North-East.

It was certainly used in the north east, my Grandad was a hewer in Northumberland.

I, have lived in cornwall for a few years now, before that east Anglia mostly, but leeds for a decade too.
Hewer i assume, is one who hews rock by hand, is it? I'm more used to hewing wood than rock, but its all good work.

Ah! I wonder if miners feel there is a big distinction between hard rock miners who mine for coal as opposed to minerals?

If Roadsterman is about he may be able to tell more on this. I believe that when they started to mine Barium at the Morrison pit at Annfield Plain people from Settlingstones came down to show the coal miners the different way to extract the mineral as opposed to coal.

Hard Rock Miner`s don`t mine for coal,in that they don`t fill coal to earn their living, although Heading men could be employed in the Colliery to drive crossmeasure drifts/levels to access new reserves.

Both metal and coal are different applications in the method of work, the only comparrison i can think of,is they both had drams that run on rails.

Hewer was once my job title - in Cumberland.

Quite a difference between coal and hard rock mining - some men can comfortably adapt to either but others struggle a bit (e.g. some ex-colliers didn't like lack of visible supports while it was sometimes difficult to get the hard rock men to appreciate them if they went to the coal 😉 ).

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
