Just criticise Putin in public. The way things seem to be going you'll soon find yourself on an all expenses paid tour of Siberia's finest salt mines...

doing what in Moscow? Moscow is a city the size of London with chaotic public transport and significant security issues for expats.

Most things in Russia are a secret of some sort and the FSB ( successors to the KGB ) are the daily government, for practical purposes. You won't be allowed to wander around on your own anywhere.

Going underground with Moscow's caving clubs

Every Thursday afternoon, not far from the Perovo metro station, a motley crew of young and middle-aged Russians gathers together after work for beers and cigarettes and to discuss their plans for exploring Russia's hidden chambers, underground rivers, lava tubes and 100-meter descents. They are the Moscow Caving Club, otherwise known as the Perovo Speloklub, a group of about 30 cavers who take off on five to six expeditions a year in search of adventure and even a little relaxation.

According to Grigory Sanevich, a long-time club member, there are few words to describe the rush of being in a cave. "You might as well ask why we love. When you see a place that no human has ever set eyes on before, it's fantastic," he said. Cavers say they are charmed by the thrill of exploring the unknown and being transported into a strange subterranean environment, completely cut off from the world above.

I've known a fair few blokes who have acquired Olgas and Svetlanas, both words appear to be Russian for "large hole in wallet", "boyfriend in Mafia" "buy me a flat/car/passport" or some combination of the three

Incidentally, 50 Rubles is about ยฃ1.10 so I suspect the costs are a bit out-of-date.

I don't think Russian women are more mercenary that their uglier UK counterparts - your opinions are so very 1990s.

Slightly off topic - does anyone know the history of the mine and shaft allegedly used to dispose of the Romanov's bodies in 1918? All the bodies have now been recovered and the two youngest two, Alexei and one of his sisters were found near the site of the other burials. It must have either been very shallow or not a true mineshaft at all - possibly more like an English denehole.

I was in Sakhalin earlier this year and gold-digging is thriving there! I don't mean the sort you do with a pan, either....

Same goes for "ugly counterparts", the main difference I can see is that the ones at home get on "reality" shows while the Russian ones are kept out of sight.. those tractor drivers and shot-putters had families too, you know!

As for mineral collecting and women...... be careful when collecting Galena. You want the sulphide one and not the hod carrying sort.

the bit about "going places never seen before" on a weekly basis sounds a bit Trekkie, too....

You'll be sent to the gulag if you get caught exploring this ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
