Hello everyone, I am new on this site so please forgive any lack of site etiquette on my part. I am the Warden of a little nature reserve in Crowhurst, East Sussex located on an old Sandstone quarry. I am desperately trying to find some information on the quarry:- who worked it? What was was the stone used for; and when? Is it true that the last people to labour there were German POWs? Any information would be gratefully received, thank you. Paul

I am sorry this is several hundred miles outside my area but I suspect that your best bet is to contact the Wealdon Iron Research Group who have studied intensively the Weald ironstone workings and associated industries of the Sussex, Kent and Surrey Weald

By way of example they describe in their Bulletin No. 13 [Second Series 1993] undertaking a few trial trenches in the RSPB Fore Wood Reserve at Crowhurst (? the same place) and uncovering evidence of Roman/late iron age iron working (a bloomery)

It might not help with the more recent history of quarry workings but should add several centuries of other context to the history of mineral exploitation in your area 🙂
