Hello,
my name ist Arne. I'm from northern Germany near Hannover.
I'm interested in mine exploring.
We have some old coal-mines in this area (~1600 - 1960). Also my grandfather and his father worked for Preussag (formerly known as "Gesamtbergamt Obernkirchen Barsinghausen") as miners.
So I'm interested in everything concerning the old mining and of course I'm also interested in mining around europe.

This is a very nice site with great pictures!

Glückauf,
Arne

Hello Arne, welcome to the site 🙂 Always good to see people visiting from outside of the UK.

Is there a big mine exploration community in Germany?

my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

Hello,

no, it's not so famous. There are only e few interested in mining exploration.

Many people in my area even don't know that there was mining around them.

Subterranea Brittannia who are bit too much into military stuff for my liking nowadays have some excellent links with some other European explorers - you may find these gruoups have links with others in Germany

Guess there are a lot more mine explorers around in Germany than you think and even some clubs quite near to you. Trouble is, you're talking about collieries, which are a bit difficult when it comes to access due to geology and ventilation. Rocksalt and potash mines aren't any better as they are usually flooded and the shafts filled in. There used to be more than 40 of them in Lower Saxony in former times. Today there are only two left, Sigmundshall and Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Ore mines and slate quarries are a lot easier for access.

http://forum.untertage.com/  for information regarding mine exploration in Germany.

If you want to get involved in some hands-on work try one of the these three:

http://www.klosterstollen.de/

www.grube-roter-baer.de/

http://feggendorfer-stolln.de/

You'll probably get more into exploring mines with the last two.

The Roter bar group are a splendid group of chaps - they made us very welcome back in 2007 when we visited the Harz.

Hello Michael,

of course I know these places. I work for Feggendorfer Stolln 😉

But in deed, there are not so many people who are interested in old mining. In my case coal mining.

Huckhoven? I've never heard of it. It's not near Hannover I think.

Sorry, currently nowhere near Hückelhoven. I'm based near Hannover some 300 km from Hückelhoven working for K+S (http://www.k-plus-s.com/en/index.html) on the abandonment of potash and rocksalt mines, but have worked for various mining companies and authorities in both Germany and the uk in the past 22 years. I've got relatives 60 km from Hückelhoven, but they haven't worked at the collieries.

Do you need any information about the Hückelhoven collieries?

There're more people interested and exploring old mines than you think, but a lot was and is kept away from the general public. This is due to differences in access to mines between UK and Germany.
