There's a new book just been published on lead mining in the Hucklow area of the Peak District entitled "Lead in the Veins", produced by local residents with the aid of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. The book is a well-illustrated 160 page paperback, containing a good mixture of historical record, local memory, modern exploration and research, and surface flora. I'm impressed with the quality of this book, it's pitched so as to be accessible to the casual reader but with enough "meat" to keep the interest of a specialist like me.

Cost - I'm told this will be selling for about a fiver (I got a free copy, as did all the PDMHS conservation team who worked on High Rake and Silence), I'll post details of where to get a copy shortly

Who are publishing the book?

I've noticed that Landmark website is down until mid 2010 and I was trying to see if the 3rd book on soughs is out yet
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

When do I get my soapbox, I need to rant on about some b***cks

Yes, that is a pain. I wanted to look up details of their recently published book about the Welsh Slate Industry but couldn't.

Does anyone know if their books are still available or are they not available again until mid 2010?

The book's being published by the village themselves, as part of their HLF grant they set up a company to publish it - I'll try and get details shortly but my home email was down last night so I couldn't contact anyone who would know.

I don't know what's happening with Landmark books in the short term or whether there'll be any way of getting them until the new owners have sorted things out. Last time I talked to Jim Rieuwerts about the third volume of the Derbyshire Lead Mines book, he was suggesting there might have to be a fourth one as he thought there was too much Winster and Low Peak material to fit in one book, plus there are updates and new discoveries for the previous two books he'd like to fit in. Watch this space....

I was talking Jim about his book at the NAMHO conference he was already having difficulty with Landmark - a company that peed most authors off as they rarely got paid. Sold books at max price and once reached break even dumped stock on the remainder market for 20% of the retail price leaving people like me with full price stock. I therefore refused to buty more than 2 copies of anything they published for this very reason with exception of Castleton Caves and Hamilton Jenkins Mines of Devon

With a sales policy like that, I'm not surprised they went bust! Common sense would suggest you either price your book as cheaply as you can for the numbers you realistically can shift and only remainder when sales of your remaining stock have pretty much stopped, or for a more limited run, tout for advance subscriptions amongst groups most likely to be interested to get as many sales as possible up-front. If I get chance to talk to Jim at the PDMHS AGM, I'll ask him whether he's got a publisher for the next book(s).

Welsh Slate Mining Past and Present is a compilation by Lindsey Porter based on Victorian Slate Mining by the late Ivor Wynne Jones. In many ways it is a highly summarised duplication with the addition of a few, different, modern photographs. It's not unreasonably priced at £4.99, but at £15.95, Victorian Slate Mining is by far the superior book.
Both are about slate mining in and around Blaenau with a strong emphasis on Llechwedd.

In that case, as I have Victorian Slate Mining by IWJ, is it worth buying the new book?

Apologies for the delay in getting details of where you can get a copy of "Lead in the Veins" from, my home phone and internet have been down for the best part of a week....The best place to get hold of a copy from is the Mining Museum http://www.peakmines.co.uk/  at Matlock Bath, cost £8.

Gwyn, when you say "a few different" and "modern" can you amplify what you mean please ?

Cheers

Landmarks remaindering policy is suicidal ... I just got the 4 John cornwall Welsh Collieries books new in 2009 for a fiver each and the Stationary engines book by Bowden (£27.50 new in 2008) also for fiver... crazy!!!
