Hi moocher

Thanks for uploading those photos of Foel Gron  It's not one that gets much attention.

I've got a few underground photos in this album http://www.aditnow.co.uk/album/Foel-Gron-Slate-Mine-19-11-2005/  if you're interested.

I can't give a full description of the underground because it's been a while and we possibly didn't explore all of it. The Gazeteer of the Welsh industry says work started around 1850 and the undergrond workings followed later. It also says that a later granite operation has destroyed most of the evidence of the slate working.

We went underground via the chamber visible in this photo (Vanoord wearing that hideous jacket confirms how old these pics are!):

At the bottom of this chamber you hit water and quite a bit of roof fall:

Then leading off to the left was a short section of level connecting about three small chambers - it was nearly waist deep in water:

We didn't get to explore any of the other entrances that day, they certainly look worth investigating although I guess the granite working will have caused a lot of collapse.

Definitely would like to go back there at some point - and there's Drum at SH735431 (pit/underground), Brynglas (small underground) at SH732423 and Cwm Teilgl (tiny underground) at SH736446 in the near area.

Last worked 1992 by Nationwide slate for slate and sand/gravel. Nationwide also worked Croes ddwy afon as well as Cwmorthin during that period. Closed down due to financial problems.

Coincidentally, Foel Gron was the backdrop to the photographs in Autocar's road test of the new Ferrari 458 (and various competitors), published a couple of weeks back.

Hello again darkness, my old friend...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
