Depends what sort of thing you want, I guess?

There's plenty of slate around Blaenau Ffestiniog, Cwmorthin in particular. Certainly enough variety to give you options from half an hour to a full day underground.

Where have you been so far?

Which side of Blaenau was that?

At a guess that would be Rhiwbach, but I shall stand ready to be corrected as I've not actually been there!

The underground side of it looks rather grubby!

Cwmorthin! http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Cwmorthin-Slate-Mine/

There's plenty to see on the "ground floor" and a particularly nice stairway on the way down adjacent to the Back Vein Incline.

The mine is massive, with a bit of scrambling to see some of the deeper bits, the alternative being thigh-deep water (there are two ways down).

If you're thinking of heading up, it's worth asking on the forum to see if anyone's around. As SimonRL reminds me, it's been a while since we did an easy trip round Cwmorthin... ::)

Ah yes, that's definitely Croes y Ddwy Afon.

Underground there's one filthy ocherous tunnel (unusually so for slate) and some collapsed chambering containing a reasonably well preserved air receiver.

On the other side of the pit is a fenced off, and clearly fiercely dangerous, boulder. I've never seen a boulder get up and run off, so presumably the fence isn't keeping it in.... There appeared to be a squeezable gap by the boulder, so perhaps it's possible to gain access to more chambers that way?
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
