tater24 - good to have you back on board, especially if we've got to start re-fighting to save the furnace wall and other buildings. I'm sure we're all waiting with baited breath to hear the latest news of the site from Iclok when it becomes available.

OK folks update time..... Coast Properties (site owner) as I previously explained has gone into administration however they did file a correct RETRO- flamin-SPECTIVE planning app to demolish the steel buildings.. 😠 DOH!... which was (not unsurprisingly) granted. On the upside there is a caviat that all remaining buildings on site (ie the ones we want saved) must be made watertight, safe and secure within a month 🙂 ..... given the admin state of the company ... hmmmmm I cant see this being progressed 😞 ... but at least we now know the council IS trying to ensure the survival of the range of old buildings  ... I will make some more enquiries and revert accordingly... Cheers IANCC

Hi just a quick message, I'm new to all this although my parents have done loads of work on family trees but I'm more interested in the finer details of my family and their lives. My ancestors on my mothers side (Outram's) were one of the founding partners of the Butterley Company and I would love to read up on things like the time line related to this company, so if anyone could help please message me.

I hope they save as much as possible of this site as i worked at Woolley colliery from 1976 to 1989 as a face worker and in headings.
then I worked at Riccall pit in the Selby coalfield until that shut.

some of the best days in my life were working at Woolley and the mates I worked with were second to none' but now Woolley is a new housing estate and everytime I go down to have a look at my old pit I end up with tears in my eyes so much so I dont go there anymore.

I lost two very good mates who lost there lives working at Woolley pit' I just wish they would have saved one little bit to remind people what was there instead of wiping it all away as though they were ashamed of our past.

Bill,
If you've got any photos from Woolley, you could upload them onto the Woolley Colliery album. They would be much appreciated by all.

I had to delete about 100 junk messages from a banned idiot spammer from this thread. I might have deleted 1 or 2 proper posts by mistake - if I did and one of your posts is missing then apologies - it wasn't intentional!

Type 'butterly' into the Mine Names search box in the top right corner of every page, then click on the butterley ironworks link.

You'll find nearly 500 photos in there 😮

Thanks for that.Does anyone know the state of play with the saga? I have passed the site several times and although there is activity ( cars, vans, lorries ) in yard, nothing seems to be happening. Also it appears that a firm has taken over the old pattern shop( at side of gates ).

My maternal grandad is listed in the 1911 census as an "iron worker - cutter down", he was at Somercotes at the time, I often wonder if he worked at Butterly, Cotes Park or Riddings Foundary, (that is what we used to call the place listed here as Alfreton Iron Works).
He returned from the 1914 - 18 incident without his legs so that put paid to his working life. Ironically, his local pub after that was the "Boot and Slipper" at Swanwick.
Always remember, nature is in charge, get it wrong and it is you who suffers!.

Thanks for swift reply ICLOK. hope any new info you can find is better than previous.
Looking at the housing development on "top plane"( High level) I would be rather worried living up there knowing that there are the old blast furnaces at the base also the shafts down to the canal, or don't they know what's underfoot?.

ICLOK,
Good to know you are continuing to keep a watchful eye on developments.
With the developer out of the picture this has taken away the immediate threat, just have to hope some bright spark developer does not kick off anything new.
Still, now that the council are much more aware of the value/nature of the site, may reduce this risk somewhat.
