Question to the judges - is Jug Holes classed as a mine? It is in the database but the photo is in one of the natural sections. If you are going to disqualify it, I'll find another one!

Peter - in your question to the judges as to whether Jug Holes is a mine or not.

YES, I would define it as a mine, the reason being that the natural cave system (both Upper and Lower) which lie at the southernmost tip of the Noon Nick Vein (for a longer historical detailed description of the Noon Nick Vein and the Jugholes cave system please refer to my earlier postings on the "Jug Holes" forum debate) and "t'owd man" as well as mining along the gangue (mining term for the other minerals i.e. fluorspar, barytes, zinc blende etc., found alongside lead in the vein) vein of the Noon Nick also mined the cave system throughout the centuries looking for lead ore. Barmasters records for the Matlock Liberty frequently refer to both Jugholes and the Noon Nick Vein, so if the Barmaster and Jury considered Jugholes to be a mine, thats good enough for me! Trust this helps the judges in making their decision.

p.s. I see Jugholes mud does not improve over the years!

Just in case anybody is confused, 'cos I sure am!

Unless I really am confused... the photographs being uploaded to AditNow are for the AditNow '09 photo comp. We've run this for a few years around this time of year.

Rhychydwr1 is judging the Hidden Earth photo competition.

However rhychydwr1 is not judging the AditNow photo competition.

Therefore comments about binning black and white photographs, or photographs without scale do not apply to the AditNow photo competition! All information and so forth is here http://www.aditnow.co.uk/static/mine-photographs-competition-2009.aspx  and judging will be on all sorts of things from composition to relevance to historical merit!

That said, I really do hope those comments don't put people off entering the Hidden Earth competition. It will be good to see more mining content on the wall. Mike Moore has been extremely generous for the past few years in sponsoring both photo competitions.
