Wellies.....The dunlop ones mentioned before but without the thermal bit in, although the next pair will be thermal. After a cutting up a tree with a chain saw and dropping a large branch on my foot incident i'll also be going for steel toes and steel foot plate again as well. Saved me a trip to casualty!

I do use an old pair of Scarpa hiking boots during the summer, but i miss the ankle protection the wellies give.

I use dunlop actifort wellies as a rule of thumb.

If it's going to be a swimming job, or involve acrobatics, I'll take some old workboots.

It would be nice to get something like a cross between wellies (ankle size) and wetsuit boots. I don't want to walk around feeling like I've got wet feet and being sanded by my socks in wellies. I don't like the way that water buggers up workboots, turns the laces to sticks and the leather to sheet steel.

I don't like the slop of wellies, or the way that workboots quickly get very knackered in water.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Dunlop Acciforts, the ones with the steel toecaps are BRILL, that combined with "warmbac" wetsocks.
My wellies have some (3) holes drilled into the arch of the foot (the bit on the inside of the instep) each time your foot hits the ground you effectively "pump ship" and self bail the wellies out - that way when your wellies eventually fill with water, the wetsocks absorb the water (keeping your feet warm), BUT, the wellies will drain out, so you're not lugging extra weight about. AND you don't have to stop every 5 mins and do the "Wellie drain dance"

Having a towel and dry socks back at base (teh car) means you come out with nearly dry feets and a quick towel down and into dry socks is a bonus!

Better to regret something you have done - than to regret something you have not done.

I've been wearing the same el-cheapo (£12 IIRC) dunlops for about 4 yrs now. Neoprene socks for anything soggy. No slips to speak of in them and no cuts or slashes, surprising considering most of what I do is Slate.

I'll carry on with them until they are no longer fit for purpose.

All depends on what kind of 'work' you will be doing. If you are going to be digging and kicking rock/crawling through little holes - wellies, as previously mentioned on this blog. If you're going to be walking exploring old mines and the likes then you might want to consider boots with a decent pair of gaiters. I use a pair of gore tex lined Lowa patrol boots with a pair of Trailwise gaiters. Never had any problems but, each to their own
