For those of you who so surveying, be it in mines or caves, I came across this little useful device:

Digital Underground Survey Instrument

http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8939

With a US$250.00 price tag I think its not bad.

Forget about the tape recorder or notepad and compass, all you need now is a tape measure or laser range finder!

There is also the Shetland Attack Pony which appears to be something similar. http://www.shetlandattackpony.co.uk/index.html

Yes, have seen this one, it won an award from CREG.

If you take in postage as well the US one is prob around £60ish cheaper. I doubt there is much in the performance as they both will be based on the same sensors I would imagine.

Support a British product?

Yes, I think it is probably a variant of the Shetland Attack Pony, with a bit of work to productionise it and make it cheaper. One of the risks of open-source software and hardware, you can't prevent anyone doing that. It has the same limitation as the original, no distance measurement, which in all fairness would not be easy.

If I were buying one, which I could not justify right now, I would get the local product. Not so far to send it for repair when the inevitable happens.

I confidently predict that the next similar product will be made in China, and will be even cheaper. Not so sure about the quality, though.
