Hi everyone
I`m doing some research for an elderly friend whose dad was killed in a roof fall at Cortonwood on november 17th 1942, his name was Arthur Williamson and he was a fitter, there don`t appear to be any records of him or the event, can anyone help please?

Hi it would seem that the records are supressed
on mining accidents post 1950
Possibly to protect living relatives

This from the Coalmining history resource center

"This is a database of over 164,000 records containing the details of coalmining accidents and deaths in the UK. Some names are shown as "Witheld" - this is for reasons of Data Protection and relates to all records of people injured since 1950"

You could still look out for a copy of the accident report from the Ministry of Fuel and Power these would have been quite widely distributed at the time and do turn up from time to time
i have several , but unfortunately not the Cortonwood one

The Durham data base only covers accidents in which 5 or more were killed , so that might also be the case with government reports ?

Yes but the accident was 1942 😉

there may be other reasons why the information is not out there
It was also in the middle of the second world war when hundreds , if not thousands of people were dying every day

His death certificate might have a pointer to a coroners inquest.

Not saying this is the case in this instance.
But some names are not listed when the deceased died from his injuries a day or so later,even though some names state injuries,
Regarding the data protection regarding deaths since 1950,

My Father is listed and he was killed in 1968.

I was only trying to point out with a bit of gentle humour that 1942 was before 1950 so that criterion didn't apply. Not worth fussing about

I think that your best bet is going to visit the Sheffield Council archives:

https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraries/archives-and-local-studies.html

They hold the archived papers of various South Yorkshire colliery companies that were deposited by the NCB including files relating directly to Cortonwood and colliery accidents collated by date

The details of their holdings are here:

The collection will be huge, but from my experience, your enquiry is the sort of thing that archivists get out of bed for 🙂 ........ I am sure that will be able to point you in the right direction!

Arthur Williamson was my uncle My mothers brother
Have spent time trying to find any records of his children would be very pleased to make contact with Arthur's children , my cousins

Arthur Williamson was also my uncle, my mother, Joyce Williamson's brother. I have tried to make contact with you earlier, but being unfamiliar about how these forums work, I must have failed. I have just spoken to my cousin Lloyd, who says he has made contact with Niel. I also have a few photos of Uncle Arthur. I have been trying to find my long lost cousins for quite a while now. if you could pass on this message it would be appreciated.
