The wreck of the Cunard Line's " Malta "
To the right can be seen the engine houses on the Crowns section of Botallack. High above is the Crowns whim which also hoisted from Skip shaft Wheal Cock which can be seen to the left, a quarter mile away!

What a great photo. I'm waiting with bated breath for one of the ship that wrecked the Wherry Shaft. 🙂

Spitfire what year is the pic roughly and what do we know of the wreck? just out of interest?.. nice histrical photo for lots of reasons...

The ship was a Cunard liner built 1865 by JG Thompson & Co Glasgow 2,132 tons 303' x 39'
Built for the North Atlantic passage but transferred to the Mediterranean 1887 wrecked 1889
Photo shows her just below Wheal Owles

She looks a nice ship.. what a shame... look at the timber figurine.... If you have an hour can you av a swim as it would look nice on my Patio 😉

2.244 ton Cunard line steamer;built 1865; 303ftx39ft; 212hp compound engines. Cargo: 2.000 tons general including copper ingots, tin plate and pig iron. Malta SS was en voyage from Liverpool for Genoa and Venice via Falmouth when she sank 15th October 1889, running ashore in dense fog under the cliffs of Kenidjack Castle, half-mile north of Cape Cornwall. All the 40 crew and 21 passengers were safely removed by the Sennen Lifeboat.

Sail plan wise shes's a Topsail Schooner (with a secondary Square Fore Course).
