After several days of deliberations, smoke is visible from the roof and the results are here!

Most importantly, many thank-yous to everyone who entered: the quality has been very high and it was a very close-run decision in the end.

The judging was done by the five administrators of AditNow, with photographs being chosen from a shortlist and listed in order of preference, with the totals then collated to produce the final result.

Photographs ranked in first place by the individual judges were given a slightly higher weighting and at the final count, there was very little between the top three photographs. Three runners-up considered of high merit are also included.

One thing that does jump out is where the photographs were taken: the top two were both taken at Carrock Wolframite mine; and the remaining four were all taken in lead mines, with two of these being in Rampgill!

And so: the results...

FIRST PLACE

Jimbo - Carrock Wolframite Mine

The prize for first place is a StenLight S7 Headlamp, sponsored by Excellent Stuff http://www.excellentstuff.co.uk/ .

SECOND PLACE

Blackshiver - Carrock Wolframite Mine

The prize for second place is a Fenix TK10 Flashlight, sponsored by ABC Powermarine http://www.abcstore.co.uk/default.asp .

THIRD PLACE

Sparty_Lea - Rampgill Lead Mine

The Mike Moore prize for third place is a £40 worth of mining books, sponsored by Moore Books http://www.moorebooks.co.uk/ .

RUNNERS UP

LAP - Smallcleugh Lead Mine

I have to confess to being extremely pleased and honoured to see a picture of mine up there among such great competition.

Thanks very much to everyone who was involved in running the competition, to the judges and especially the sponsors for providing such excellent prizes!

Personally I also owe thanks to several of the members of Aditnow who regularly post fantastic photographs to the database for inspiring me to take a bit more trouble with my own picture taking.

Well done "Jimbo" a great Cleveland one-two!
Just one thing, are you really sure your winning picture is of Carrock and not Spa Wood 😉
Sparty_lea - never mind all that "thanks to" rubbish. You are an inspiration to the guy's in the North East. Indeed it was you that converted me from Caving to Mine-Exploring when we were locked out of the caves during foot and mouth.
Keep up the good work in Weardale.

I agree! It was Sparty Lea that inspired me to try backlighting my photos instead of just lighting from the front. Now I am addicted to playing with lights and cameras

😉 Glad if I helped you see the light! No offense to cavers but mines are far more interesting.

As to the rest though- my underground photographs were pretty awful before I joined Aditnow and saw what could be done with a bit of effort.

Wow I’m completely speechless & honoured to see my picture winning this competition; I never expected it at all 😮 Sorry I didn’t reply sooner but my computer at home packed up last week (don’t worry I managed to recover all my photos !!!) & I have been having to log on using a wireless mobile connection (piece of cr*p) in the site office at work so have only just noticed this.

Just to echo what Sparty has said, a big thank you to everyone who entered the competition, the five judges and especially the sponsors for providing such excellent prizes, looks like I have no excuse not to ditch the trusty Oldham now 😉

I must also say a big thank you to Ferret & J who assisted with the lighting on that photo

Just a couple of years ago I was taking most of my photos with a point & shoot but it was the quality of the photographs regularly posted by several contributors to Aditnow & Mine-Explorer (in particular Tony Holland & Miles) that really inspired me to spend more time & effort on my own photos, so thanks again guys I owe you one :flowers:

With the Snow Photo comp it reminded me that I have still not received my framed photo for the runner up prise.

Any news on it?

The eagle eyed will notice that the photo comp has reappeared on the home page. This isn't a mistake, it's because I never got around to doing a results page until now so I've linked it from the home page. You can see the winning photos here: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/static/photocomp2008results.aspx

Framed prints will be sent out (finally) at the weekend. Sorry for the delay.
