We are pleased to announce the 2008 AditNow Photography Competition, now an annual event.

Before leading onto the main information about prizes, rules and suject matter, a note on the length of time the competition will run.

We have opted to run the competition for 3 months, officially from Monday 1st September until the end of November. This may seem a long time, but we've allowed this length of time for two reasons.

Firstly because underground photography is time consuming, and this gives people time to get out and perhaps photograph something they specifically want to as best they can.

Secondly, in the hope that it gives time for the competition to get as much exposure as it can, so as many people can enter as possibly can and so the standard is as high as possible.

Please do feel free to spread the word - with the fantastic prizes on offer thanks to the generosity of the sponsors, we hope it will have a broad appeal.

Onwards!

Competition 'officially' starts today

Closing date is 31st November. I'm sure we'll get asked why it's running for so long, but just to reiterate what I've said above...

- U/G photography can be time consuming, so this gives people who want to enter enough time to go out and take their killer photograph

- Gives enough time to get the word out, if you know other people who might be interested or other groups (web or otherwise) then please feel free to spread the word :flowers:

A sample entry to show the correct format for submitting photos online. Photos do not need to be of the same location, you can submit between 1 and 3, change them right up to the end of the competition (full rules on the competition page) and juding will be on the best of your entries.

Just a gentle bump for the annual photography competition :)

We've not had a great many entries yet, although there's still plenty of time left.

If anybody has got any ideas for promoting the competition, or can help in doing so (e.g. to mining clubs or groups, or even photography clubs) then it'd be great to hear from you. There's some excellent (no pun intended, honest) prizes up for grabs this year and it'd be good to see lots of entries.

[mod]I've pruned the thread somewhat to remove the discussion that it veered off into. If it could be kept on-topic in future, this would be much appreciated 🙂 [/mod]

A few points for the sake of clarification:

We've called this year's competition 'Lighting the Dark' and have mentioned 'the careful use of light'. Given that light is the predominant issue for the underground photographer to deal with, using it carefully can hardly be considered to be promoting artistic photographs that are not true to the subject matter.

The competition is not for contrived, faked or otherwise processed photographs that are not true to the subject matter. It is not an 'arty' photography competition; and not for coloured lights, coloured filters, wavy light effects or excessive use of Photoshop processing.

What the competition IS about is high quality, well composed and well lit underground photograph of mines. Everything else is up to the photographer. Regardless of whether the winning shot took 30 minutes to compose and take - or 5 seconds - it'll be the winner because it's a stonking and relevant photograph.

Fundamentally though, this competition is about having a bit of fun, taking the best photograph you can; and about SimonRL and I putting something back into the site by way of grateful thanks to all those people who contribute. We give freely of our time to set these things up and run them, and have provided (with Mike Moore, to whom once again we are very grateful for his sponsorship) the prizes.

All that really remains to be said is: Good luck!

I'm surprised at the relative few who have entered this year. How many entered last year Simon?

We had 27 entrants last year, and 16 entrants this year.

Which is a bit disappointing, especially as the site is about four times busier this year as it was 12 months ago and given the standard of the prizes offered.

However on the flip side...

This year's competition was for underground photography, whereas last year's was for above ground photography, so there are always going to be fewer people venturing underground into disused mines to take photographs than there are taking photographs of above ground remains.

Sadly though this year's competition was marred by some negative comments; from accusations that photo competitions were a form of 'willy waving' to some really unneccessary comments about arty nonsense from some non-contributors.

However, all that said, given the incredible standard of the bulk of the photos entered this year I do consider it a success :)

Maybe next year (yes there will be one next year) could have categories for above and below ground to make it more representative of the wider hobby.

We'll be doing the judging this week and will announce the results before this coming Sunday, with prizes being sent out next week.
