Notes
#1 The data sheet figures are 'minimum' not 'typical', this applies to both the above.

#2 The cheap Skyray torches dont deliver the maximum output anyway, they drive the LEDs in parallel from a seriously rubbish generic driver. I have written about these before. The output as tested in my lab was about 7 amps shared between the whole LED array, nosediving as the battery depleted.

Trouble is that whatever current is generated is shared, so the number of LEDs means little.
The one I bought and tested was sharing the 7 amps between all the LEDS and was obtained by a MOSFET switching to direct drive from the 4 parallel cells. As I have posted before, I tried 4 Sanyo high discharge and blew everything.

The Imolent DX 80 does deliver, but gets very hot very quickly. A few minutes and its too hot to comfortably hold. Its also very heavy, I have built a sort of shoulder holster for mine, dont ask where i got this habit, It holds 8 cells in a sealed pack being rechargeable from a 19 volt laptop charger.

Its usefulness was well to purpose when I took photos at Goginan in upper chest deep water, the state of the 60 fathom cross cut in the drought. The dive camera, an XP 120 was on full auto and hand held.
I did the same at NAMHO RFD meet this year when we were all on the move and no time for tripods etc.

Outside, its like getting a series of cars to line up and all put their headlamps on main beam.
Its the sort of thing one can be a nuisance with.

Lumens are units of luminous flux and should not be confused with lux which is a different thing altogether.

It cannot be physically measured and is a figure is obtained for any particular lamp using the LED manufacturers data sheet and simple math.

Another thing to remember is the Trade description Act is obviously unenforceable against eBay overseas sellers. Hence the frankly daft figures quoted for cheap torches.

Going to Simon's query. The most powerful pocket torch I have tested is the the one from Kaidomain sold as "KD Litker" and powering a Cree XHP 35.
The manufacturers min lumens is 1800, typical as said will be higher. The torch initially overdrives the emitter, a bad point, but quickly settles. I have reason to believe that this fault has been fixed.
Its a very tight beam, rather than an area light.

Anyway, remember the BIIIG torch that they had? What make was that, any idea? It was EXTREMELY bright especially considering how much the technology has advanced in that time.

I am just in the process of editing a little underwater video in Holme Bank . I tried a pair of budget video lights off my mate to see how they performed, as dive lights cost a fortune !! and

to be honest I/We were shocked at the performance , I will post up soon so you can all see guys as you said Roy I think the Chinese are getting the hang of it .:thumbup:

@Michael, those D4/D3S look good, but maybe a bit hard to get in the UK. @Paul, that torch looks just the job, thanks 🙂 And @Roy, yes it's probably over quoting it's lumens by 100 to 200% but for what I need it for I don't really mind. Very bright is good enough :thumbsup:

I was somewhat underwhelmed by those torches. They were about 9 feet long and took 4 people to carry, gas discharge I think, and generated a lot of heat, and IIRC some or all of them failed on the trip - mostly due to water getting on the front?

@Paul - I've ordered a "32,000" lumen Skyray, thanks for the suggestion :)

It's just to chuck in a kit bag for firework displays, for final sweeps of the site for scallies from 50m or so away, so if 32,000 is really 10,000 and the run time is minutes it'll be fine - I only need it for 30s or so.

You will be fine with that Simon, just be aware that on full power the burn time is only about 30-45 mins depending on your battery choice. I use these as Roy gave me a good tip if the word "fire" is in the battery description that is telling you something.
