In fact he has arrived... This was the seen today at the Ripley site dating back to 1790

lets hope the new owners... a Crane manufacturer intends to retain more than just the name. I have a feeling though that the redevelopment of the site has more to do with paying off some of the ยฃ2.1 million debts it incurred prior to take over.
It will be sad if Butterley's association with Ripley ends after some 219 years. Lets hope something is done to ensure the conservation and preservation of the original buildings and the intact furnace bank... both are I believe at least listed.

Let us hope no sudden and unexpected overnight arson attack occurs! Not of course that I would suggest that it might be by anyone other than the local chavs/hoodies, perish the thought!

What was the business of this company? What did they do on this site?

They were latterly fabricators and built the Falkirk wheel ... they had a reputation for top class solution engineering/fabrication.

I think I may be right in saying that if one building on a site is listed then every other building within the currtiledge of the site built before 1947 is also covered?

Of course that doesn't mean they'll be preserved.

That certainly didn't apply when the buildings at Coedyparc (Bethesda) were listed. Some were excluded from the listing including some very old Gwalau.

Just checked and it's actually 1st of July 1948, however I guess if it's specifically excluded within the listing.......

The guidance words it as outbuildings so I'm not sure what the situation is if the listed building is not the primary structure on the site?

We'll find out tomorrow as I intend checking with the council....
I do believe you are right tho... I will be happy if the NW, N and Furness structures are kept.

Hell of a shame when a company like this stops trading. It would be extremely difficult to restart a buisiness like this again as most probebly the machinery will have been sold for scrap or exported to another country.
And the skilled craftsmen that have done work like this will in time be imposible to recrut as younger people will not be taught the skills.
Would be good to hear if some of the old staff would start a new venture at a smaller scale.

No further news... it appears the site is to be totally redeveloped for further housing... Still waiting on Council for a response re listing of original buildings.

The gatehouse is particularly important as the Pentrich Revolutionaries stopped there to demand arms....

I don't believe any jobs have been saved as the new owners are totally out the area... there seems to be a local silence about the whole place...

I remember the Butterley engineering works very well, I lived in the grounds where the memorial to William Jessop is, he was one of the co. founders of the company, found a nice Butterley company mug in the kitchen area of the Monument Hall which is adjacent to the memorial tower when I lived there from 1969 to 1979, Dad was the Game keeper for Bernard Swain who bought the estate from the Butterley Co.

Iclok, in your initial posting you said the site was now in the hands of a firm of crane manufacturers. Do you have a name for the new firm and will they be taking on any of the Butterley staff?

The crane manufacturer Wellman Booth bought the name and the company debt in all probability. Wellman Booth specialises in overhead cranes for the nuclear industry and other specialist applications so the Butterley name suits them well as a brandname they can sell that has a great reputation for quality one off heavy fabrication projects. 50 employees lost their jobs latterly... not heard any found employment with the new company!

Might be worth contacting the local authority/English Hysterior to find out why the others weren't listed and could they be?
